5 Years After This Girl Got A Disneyland Surprise, The Reaction She Had Remains Priceless

There’s plenty of nice surprises to be had in life – like finding out that you’ve won the lottery, for instance, or that you’re the guest of honor at an unanticipated birthday party. However, when Chloe Clem was surprised by her mom, the news caused her to react in a way that remains priceless to this day.

You see, Katie Clem and her husband had chosen to thrill their kids with a visit to Disneyland. And the parents from Salt Lake City, Utah, probably figured that the announcement of the trip would be received with rapturous delight by their two girls. Disneyland is practically synonymous with children’s fun, after all.

And the Clem family weren’t alone in wanting to visit Disneyland from Utah, either. In fact, it’s been suggested to avoid visiting the famous theme park in October, since that’s when many schools in Utah take a short recess. As a consequence, there’s likely to be a huge influx of children from the state – thus making for longer wait times for rides as well as bigger crowds.

On this particular morning, though, Katie and her husband knew that they were going to surprise the kids, and so the parents decided to make sure that the whole thing was captured on camera. By contrast, their two girls, Lily and younger sister Chloe, had no idea of what was about to happen.

Still, in the footage taken that day Katie gives her daughters a clue by remarking in mock disbelief that the family have driven past the school. Laughing and apparently pleased that her father has missed the turn, Lily replies, “Yay, no school!” Chloe, on the other hand, seems rather unimpressed by this turn of events.

Then, as her father pulls over, Lily continues to chant “No school!” For her part, Katie encourages the excitement, even asking Chloe if she wants to join in with her big sister. The mom also goes on to question Lily as to whether she does indeed want to skip school that day.

And Lily is more than open to the idea of not having to endure any lessons for the next 24 hours. “Let’s ditch school today,” Katie agrees. After that declaration, Lily is openly delighted and cheers from the back seat. However, neither of the little girls appear to be prepared for the surprise that Katie is about to spring on them.

“I think we should ditch school,” Katie repeats. “And go to Disneyland. What do you think?” Yet while Lily concurs, there’s an element of confusion on her face. It’s clear that she doesn’t quite believe what her mother is saying yet.

“Are you serious?” Lily then asks. Katie confirms that the family are really going to Disneyland, at which point Lily can’t contain her emotions. The ten-year-old is so overwhelmed, in fact, that she begins crying and putting her hands to her face.

But despite Lily’s rather over-the-top reaction, it’s Chloe’s response to the news that has made the footage of the car trip so famous. As Lily tries to stop crying, Katie pans the camera left to look at Chloe. There, the little girl’s face is caught in an expression that would ultimately go viral.

Seemingly indifferent to the news of heading to Disneyland, Chloe looks totally nonplussed at the emotional display from her sister. Instead, the toddler looks into the camera with suspicion. Furthermore, she does not say a word in response to the surprise.

And when Katie uploaded the video to YouTube, users were quick to comment about the younger girl’s hilarious reaction. As a matter of fact, it may have been Chloe’s apparent apathy that caused the clip to go viral; the footage has been viewed over 17 million times on the video-sharing platform.

Meanwhile, to Katie, the two girls’ reactions are representative of their personalities in general. “That is so funny to me,” the mother from Utah told Good Morning America following the success of the video. “Because that’s what Chloe does – a little stink face.”

Katie continued, “[Chloe]’s staring at Lily like, ‘What is your problem?’” It wasn’t a big deal to me at the time, but to see the reaction of people liking Chloe’s response is pretty funny. Lily has always been like that since she was Chloe’s age. She’s very emotional [and] wears her heart on her sleeve.”

The mom added, “But Chloe is my little danger kid. She’s just like, ‘Yeah, whatever.’ I don’t even have any words for it.” And it seems that Chloe’s expression has brought the family considerable recognition too. Nowadays, the little girl, her big sister and her mom share an Instagram account that boasts in excess of 670,000 followers.

What’s more, Chloe herself has become a meme. Well, to be more specific, the screenshot of the moment that the toddler looks suspiciously at the camera is now a mainstay of the internet; it’s been used all over to convey a sense of general dissatisfaction or alarm.

And after a while, the meme took on a life of its own. For instance, it spurred on a Tumblr page dubbed “Chloe Queen of Everything,” which boasted a series of photographs of celebrities digitally reworked to include Chloe’s face. In fact, shots of the girl with her famous expression superimposed into all kinds of situations would become a trend on Tumblr.

As for what Chloe is up to today, five years on from the surprise trip to Disneyland? Well, she and Lily now both have modeling careers. There’s still one photo of Chloe that’s proved more popular than all the rest, though, of course. And the image of the little girl with her disdainful face is still showing up in some perhaps unexpected places.

For instance, during a trip to Brazil, Chloe discovered that her likeness was being used for a Google ad campaign. And Katie, who manages the Instagram account for the girls, was quick to comment on the family’s behalf. “Google is amazing!” she wrote on the social media site. “Chloe loves seeing herself on the elevator door and all over #saopaulo! You have a beautiful city!”

Then, in April 2017 the girls and their mom decided to make yet another trip to California. This time, though, it seems that Chloe was a little more thrilled to be visiting Disneyland again than she had been when she was a toddler. Indeed, in a video posted to Instagram, Chloe’s excitement is obvious, as from the back seat she whoops and cheers at the prospect of visiting the theme park again.
