Candace Cameron Bure Shared The Unique Diet That Keeps Her Looking So Young

Candace Cameron Bure shot to fame before she’d even reached her teens as D.J. Tanner on the hugely popular TV sitcom Full House. The show became a family favorite from 1987 until it was taken off air eight years later. And when the series returned for a Netflix reboot in 2015, Cameron Bure had barely appeared to age a day.

Yes, the little sister of actor and evangelist Kirk Cameron has always been renowned for looking much younger than her age. But even so, Fuller House viewers couldn’t quite believe that the eldest Tanner daughter was now in her early 40s. So what’s the secret to Cameron Bure’s seemingly eternal youth?

Well, in 2017 Cameron Bure revealed all in an interview with Cosmopolitan magazine. And perhaps unsurprisingly, it takes a lot of dedication, determination and discipline. Here’s a look at Cameron Bure’s eventful career and how she now feels fitter in her 40s than she has at any other time in her life.

Candace Cameron Bure first followed in the acting footsteps of her older sibling Kirk when she landed a five-episode guest stint on TV medical drama St. Elsewhere at the age of just six. It was around this time that her brother bagged his first major role on TV show Two Marriages. Kirk would also go on to take center stage in TV sitcom Growing Pains in 1985, but once again his younger sister wasn’t far behind.

Indeed, following one-off parts in TV shows TJ Hooker, Who’s the Boss? and Punky Brewster, Cameron Bure guested as Jenny Foster on Growing Pains. That same year, she also won a part in a prime-time family sitcom, Full House. And it was her role as D.J., the oldest daughter in the Tanner family, that helped the actress became a household name.

Full House wasn’t loved by the critics. However, audiences at home didn’t appear to agree with the cognoscenti and it regularly appeared in the Nielsen Top 30 ratings. In fact, the show was so popular that it ran for an impressive eight seasons. And Cameron Bure was just one of its many ever-present cast members.

But Cameron Bure was also keen to test her acting skills elsewhere during her lengthy run on the sitcom. In its first year she played Eric Stoltz’s younger sibling in big-screen teen movie Some Kind of Wonderful. And 12 months later she appeared as Julia Fielding in a TV movie remake of the Joan Crawford hit I Saw What You Did.

Cameron Bure also shared the screen with Sally Field and Tom Hanks in 1988’s Punchline. And by the time Full House came to an end in 1995 she’d also shown up in musical horror Monster Mash and the TV movies Camp Cucamonga, Sharon’s Secret and Visitors of the Night. And then there were the two separate hosting gigs at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, too.

Cameron Bure continued to rack up the TV movie credits following Full House’s cancelation. She played the victims of domestic abuse and date rape in No One Would Tell and She Cried No, respectively. But she also further showcased her comic timing with guest spots on Boy Meets World and Cybill.

After that, Cameron Bure put her career on hold in the late 1990s to focus on raising a family. After walking down the aisle with Valeri Bure, an ice hockey player from Russia, in 1996, she gave birth to daughter Natasha in 1998. Her son Lev arrived two years later, while Maksim completed the family unit in 2002.

Cameron Bure briefly returned to our screens in 2001 with roles in Canadian TV mystery Twice in a Lifetime and short feature The Krew. But she then largely disappeared from view for another six years. However, her second comeback in 2007 put Cameron Bure back on the map for much longer.

After guesting on Disney Channel comedy That’s So Raven, Cameron Bure appeared in Christian drama The Wager alongside country singer Randy Travis. In 2008 she co-starred with Tom Arnold in Hallmark Channel movie Moonlight and Mistletoe. This would be just the first of her many collaborations with the family-friendly network.

In 2009 Cameron Bure landed her first recurring guest role since D.J. Tanner. The actress played mother figure Summer van Horne for three seasons of ABC Family show Make It or Break It. The teen dramedy was based around a group of young gymnasts with ambitions of competing in the Olympics.

Following the show’s cancelation, Cameron Bure returned to the Hallmark Channel where she established herself as one of the network’s main stars. She became particularly associated with their festive output, starring in the likes of Switched for Christmas and The Heart of Christmas. Cameron Bure also served as executive producer on many of these projects.

Cameron Bure added another string to her bow in 2014 when she signed up for the 18th season of TV show Dancing with the Stars. The actress was partnered with professional Mark Ballas for the ABC hit. And impressively the pair managed to reach the final, finishing third behind Meryl Davis and Amy Purdy.

A year later Cameron Bure capitalized on her prime-time exposure when she bagged a co-hosting slot on TV talk show The View. The actress joined Paula Faris, Joy Behar, Raven-Symone, Whoopi Goldberg and Michelle Collins on the daytime panel in her first season. But she waved goodbye to the show in 2016 to concentrate on a certain Netflix reboot.

Yes, a full 21 years after the Tanner family appeared to have bid farewell to viewers for good, most of its members returned for a revival named Fuller House. This time around, Cameron Bure’s character, who now went by the name of D.J. Tanner-Fuller, took center stage alongside younger sister Stephanie and BFF Kimmy. And that wasn’t the only major change.

Indeed, Fuller House sure made viewers of its predecessor feel old when it debuted on the streaming service in 2016. For D.J. was now a widowed veterinarian with three children of her own, while Stephanie also had a teen daughter. The sisters, alongside Kimmy, all cohabited in the same San Francisco home in which they had grown up.

Fuller House followed a similar pattern to the show from which it derived. Once again, critics were less than kind to its wholesome brand of family comedy. However, audiences lapped it up, and it was once cited as Netflix’s most-watched original show. The sitcom came to an end in 2019 after five seasons.

Not content with being an actress, executive producer, TV host and near-champion dancer, Cameron Bure added author to her list of talents in 2011. Her first book, Reshaping It All: Motivation for Physical and Spiritual Fitness, reached the New York Times Bestseller list. She followed it up with 2014’s Balancing It All, 2015’s Dancing Through Life and 2018’s Kind is the New Classy.

Of course, Cameron Bure has become just as renowned for her impossibly youthful appearance as her many talents. In fact, the star is essentially the female version of Paul Rudd, having appeared to barely age a day throughout her many years in the spotlight. But as you’d expect, it takes a lot of hard work to keep looking so young.

In 2017, Cameron Bure gave an interview to Cosmopolitan magazine about her everyday routine and just why she needs to maintain it for her career. She said, “When you’re hired to play a specific role and look a certain way, it’s something that you have to keep up with. Especially being on a television series.”

As well as the positive impact on her career, Cameron Bure’s strict age-defying regime has also had several health benefits. In fact, the actress made a particularly bold claim while speaking to Cosmopolitan. “I’m more fit today at 40 than I’ve ever been at any other time in my life,” she said.

Cameron Bure had previously admitted to suffering from bulimia nervosa when she was in her early 20s. In a separate interview with Cosmopolitan in 2016, the star had revealed that she’d had an “unhealthy relationship with food” during the period in which she first relocated to Montreal with her partner Valeri. However, Cameron Bure insists that she didn’t develop the eating disorder for the reasons many people think.

She insisted, “It was never from a source of wanting to lose weight or the way that I looked.” Cameron Bure then added, “I knew I had a problem when I couldn’t just say, ‘I don’t want to do this any more.’ Because there were days I didn’t want to do that any more.”

And contrary to rumor, Cameron Bure didn’t develop any kind of eating disorder during her early rise to fame. Speaking about her time on Full House, the actress said, “I didn’t feel like I had to attain a specific beauty standard. I just knew that I wasn’t always the thinnest girl on television, but it didn’t knock my confidence.”

Thankfully, Cameron Bure managed to overcome the eating disorder and has since maintained a much healthier relationship with food. However, as Bure revealed in her 2017 chat with Cosmopolitan, she still has plenty of rules to follow when it comes to her diet. And eating her greens is one of the biggest.

Indeed, although Cameron Bure isn’t a vegan per se, she does stick to a diet largely free of animal products. However, she will occasionally treat herself to eggs and the odd fish dish. In fact, she once posted a photo of salmon and poached eggs on toast on Instagram with the caption, “Breakfast never tasted so good.”

Cameron Bure also ensures that she removes white flours, dairy and refined sugars from her diet. And this isn’t because she has a particular food allergy or desire to lose weight. “They’re just not good for you, that’s why,” a matter of fact Cameron Bure told Cosmopolitan about her reasoning for doing so.

Of course, it’s not just dieting that helps Cameron Bure keep her ageless look. She also regularly hits the gym on her own for up to 60 minutes at a time. And when she gets the chance to join Kira Stokes, a longtime trainer friend based in the Big Apple, Cameron Bure will work up a sweat over an almighty two-and-a-half hours.

When she’s not with Stokes, Cameron Bure will motivate herself by watching her trainer’s video workouts online or by using FaceTime for a remote one-to-one session. To help boost her energy, the actress will consume a healthy amount of carbs beforehand. And she also finishes her workout with a snack full of protein to aid muscle recovery.

Speaking to Parade magazine in 2019, Cameron Bure revealed, “For me, working out is so much more than body health. It’s also mental health, and that is when I push myself on those lazy or overwhelmed days to get up and do something, even if it’s a walk. Every movement counts. And I’m gonna keep moving while my body allows me to. I never want to take it for granted.”

And she also told the same magazine that she gets a little help from a fellow child star of the 1980s with her workout. She said, “Right now, I play Tiffany’s 2019 version of “I Think We’re Alone Now” on repeat a ridiculous amount of times to get me through at least 35 minutes of cardio. I get my ’80s music, but updated and the beat is perfect.”

Happily, Cameron Bure doesn’t find it too tedious sticking to her dietary rules. She told Cosmopolitan, “I have the things I know I like to eat, and I just kind of stay within those recipes.” Regulars on the Cameron Bure menu include breakfast protein shakes and quinoa with a range of vegetables and tofu.

“Quit eating before you’re completely full” is another dietary goal to which Cameron Bure tries to stick. And if you’re worried about food waste when dining out, then the actress has a handy tip. “If you listen to your stomach and just eat until you’re satisfied, not full, you can always take the rest of your food to go,” she told Cosmopolitan.

Luckily, Cameron Bure has been supported in her healthy endeavors by her ice hockey star boyfriend. Indeed, Valeri Bure is more than happy to follow the lead of his celebrity wife when it comes to food. However, the couple’s three slightly more picky children prefer to eat differently to their parents.

Yet although her family might not all be eating the same foods, Cameron Bure insists that they still all eat together. In fact, dinner is considered one of the most important times of the day in the actress’s household. And she makes sure to serve meals individually rather than on platters to help with portion control.

However, it’s a slightly different story when Cameron Bure is working away. The star once told Cosmopolitan, “I don’t love cooking, so when I’m on my own in New York, I tend to eat prepared foods, like lentil soup from Juice Press and Whole Foods. I don’t always eat soup for dinner, but it’s surprisingly filling. I ate an orange for dessert – although I’ll sometimes have few pieces of dark chocolate when I’m craving something sweeter.”

Cameron Bure’s regime may sound tough going, but it’s one that has produced results of which she can be proud. In an earlier interview with Cosmopolitan the star revealed, “Like most women, I fuss about a few things I wish I could change. [But] I am at my best weight and fitness level considering my lifestyle.”

Fuller House may have come to an end. But that doesn’t mean that Cameron Bure will be disappearing from our screens any time soon. Indeed, as well as continuing to assume her TV detective character Aurora Teagarden, the actress will also grace the Hallmark Channel in another festive movie, Christmas Town.
