Kim Kardashian Opened Up About Falling For Kanye West – And Why He Was Warned To Stay Away From Her

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have been married for six years now. And, perhaps to the surprise of some, their relationship seems stronger than ever. The rapper and the reality TV star have gone through a lot in order to get married and start a family. In fact, as a documentary recently revealed, Kanye was once told to not bother with Kim at all.

The documentary in question was an episode of the rebooted E! True Hollywood Story. Ever since the series originally started back in 1996, it’s been noted for the drama and salaciousness of its biographies. The Kim-Kanye episode aired on October 13, 2019, and was an absolute must-watch for fans of the famous reality TV couple.

Kim, along with several members of her inner circle, had a lot of revelations to make on the show. Some of them were funny and some were downright strange. However, the one about Kanye and how he defied naysayers in order to be with the reality star was actually very touching. Viewers of the show might walk away with a different opinion about the mega-couple Kimye.

The couple have been massive in the reality TV world for a long time now, and they’re not afraid to flaunt their wealth and fame. When they got married in May 2014, it was a huge, globe-spanning party. It started off in France, with a bachelorette party at Paris’ Eiffel Tower no less. And it all ended at the luxurious Forte di Belvedere in Florence.

And that’s not the only time Kimye have been, well, Kimye. When their daughter North had her first birthday a month after the wedding, the party wasn’t just a cake and a few friends invited round . Nope, it was a huge celebration with a Ferris wheel and several stages for entertainment. The proud parents nicknamed it “Kidchella.”

The Kardashian-Wests have been subject to a lot of hate and criticism over the years. Kim especially is considered the kind of celebrity who’s just “famous for being famous.” In 2015 T Magazine said in a piece on Kanye, “When the couple appeared together on the cover of Vogue [magazine] last year, the move was, depending on your perspective, a stroke of PR genius or a naked plea for highbrow validation.”

But the personal relationship between the two megastars has actually always been a fairly normal one. Kim actually discussed their first meeting on her episode of E! True Hollywood Story. As she explained, “I met Kanye in 2002. He would ask everyone who I was and they would say, ‘Oh, you know, she has a boyfriend.’”

Kim went on, “We just always kept on connecting and coming into each other’s lives, and then he invited me to Paris to his fashion show. And then that’s when it, like, happened. That’s when we started our relationship. But I was like, ‘Why didn’t this happen sooner?’ It was just right.”

The couple have four children together now – North, of course, plus Saint, Chicago, and Psalm. The reality star found it difficult to have a family, because she suffered from pre-eclampsia during her pregnancy with North and placenta accrete afterwards, which required surgery. As a result, following a difficult second pregnancy with Saint, Chicago and Psalm were delivered via a surrogate.

Everything seems to be going well at the moment for Kim and family. But things weren’t always like that. The reality star also discussed her childhood during the documentary, including the period of her life when her father, famed lawyer Robert Kardashian, defended O.J. Simpson during his 1994 double murder trial.

O.J. Simpson was accused of murdering his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ron Goldman. Nicole also happened to be a good friend of Kim’s mother, Kris Jenner. Kris and Robert were divorced at that point, but the reality star remembers the whole terrible incident. As she told told E!, “[That was] the first time my family really got divided.”

It seems that Kim and her sister Kourtney got to see those divisions up close. “One day my dad took me and Kourtney into the trial,” she said. “And then my mom happened to be sitting with Nicole’s family. […] We looked over and my mom was looking at us, like, ‘What are you girls doing here? Why are you sitting on that side?’”

There was even worse to come as the trial went on. At one point the Kardashian family exited a restaurant to find the ugly words “n***** lover” scrawled over their car. The Simpson case had inflamed racial tensions all over the country, and the teenage Kim got to see some of that first-hand.

Kim also got an unpleasant lesson in the workings of the media at that time. At one point, she said during the documentary, she went to see her father. And the next day, that visit was reported as “Robert Kardashian’s mistress pulls up to his house.” The reality star said, “I was like, this can’t be real – they lie like this? I learned the lesson of, not everything is what you think it is.”

And yet, despite all that, Kim still wanted to be a reality TV star when she got older. Her old friend Allison Statter appeared on the documentary and said, “The Real World launched in 1992 when Kim and I were 12 years old. And Kim was mesmerized. She was like, ‘I have got to get on The Real World.’”

According to Kim, her father was even once told by a psychic that the Kardashian family would become even more well-known than they already were. She explained, “The psychic told him, ‘Ya know, your last name Kardashian is going to be known worldwide. And it’s not now, […] because of your O.J. fame.’ And my dad was like, ‘Yeah, okay, this is exactly why I don’t like psychics.’”

And it was another friend of Kris’s, Kathie Lee Gifford, who ended up encouraging the Kardashians to get their own spot on reality TV. During the documentary, the famous mom said, “[She] would tell me constantly, ‘You guys need a show. Nobody would believe what goes on in your life.’ This went on for a couple of years, until I met the casting director for Dancing With the Stars. She came over for dinner one night and was just watching all of this chaos. She goes, ‘This is just crazy, I’ve got to introduce you to Ryan Seacrest.’”

Obviously, the rest is history. But Kim also learned, as she revealed to E!, several reality TV tricks from her friend Paris Hilton. This was before she ended up eclipsing her spotlight. Once upon a time, though, as entertainment journalist Leslie Bruce said on the show, the future reality star was “best known as being Paris Hilton’s sidekick.”

That all changed, though, and it was partly down to Paris herself. She taught Kim the ins and outs of the business. As the reality star recalled during the documentary, “I remember we were sitting in her SLR Mercedes… And at that point, the paparazzi would lay on the ground to try and get a picture of you, up your dress, and she said, ‘Okay. We need to make sure you don’t give them that.’”

Kim went on, “[Paris] was such a great mentor for me. I really am grateful for my experiences with her… She’s a huge, huge reason for my success.” The relationship between the two women has been very strained at times, however, with some nasty things said back in 2008. But these days, the pair do appear to be getting along.

The future reality star also quickly learned how to manipulate the media. Before Kim was the international megastar she is today, her friend Jonathan Cheban told her she had to “do something crazy.” Why? To ensure that her life was considered newsworthy. He then explained on E! True Hollywood Story what the two of them did.

As Jonathan revealed to E!, “We were in New York. And Britney Spears was in this hotel, locked up in her room. We notice there’s paparazzi outside.” So the pair got into a Rolls Royce – those are the sort of cars you have easy access to when you’re super rich – and pulled it up outside the hotel.

But Kim and Jonathan didn’t get a glimpse of the famous singer. Instead, they simply hid. Jonathan said, “We literally go hide in the lobby in a phone booth, wait ten minutes, then come out. And the next day the story was ‘Kim went to see Britney.’” The reality star herself then added, “They said in the press that we were there to have dinner with Britney Spears. [And] this whole thing didn’t even happen.”

Of course, stories like that don’t help the reality star’s reputation of becoming famous for being famous. In fact, they make it easier to assume that the parts of Kim’s life that we see have been carefully manipulated for maximum exposure. But her relationship with her now-husband has always seemed authentic. And that’s despite the level of reality TV fame and wealth that they both command.

During the show, Kim talked about how Kanye was warned off from her at the beginning. In fact, E! True Hollywood Story had located some old tweets from people about the relationship. And they include things such as, “Hey @KimKardashian, you are ruining Kanye. Give him back to us.”

Perhaps some people might have been frightened away by that, but not Kanye. As Kim explained on the documentary, “Everyone would tell him, you can’t be with her, she’s a reality star, she’s gonna sink your career. And he was just like ‘But I love her. Like, I don’t care.’” And the rapper himself had something to say on the show.

Kanye told the documentary why he fell in love with his wife. He said, “Anytime I was around her, [or] I saw her, it was a magnetic attraction to this force of energy. She was good, pure, happy, loving, […] brave, courageous, strong.” Clearly, some bad advice and a few mean tweets weren’t going to keep him away.

The rapper has, of course, spoken before about his relationship with Kim. On Hot 97’s The Angie Martinez Show back in 2013, he said, “Our love story is a love story for the ages. I felt like when we first got together, it was like a Romeo and Juliet kind of thing, where she’s a reality star and I’m a rapper, and people talk about how our brands connect and what doesn’t fit.”

And in September 2019, the month before their episode of E! True Hollywood Story aired, Kanye interviewed Kim for Vogue Arabia magazine. The intimate conversation marked a first for the couple, as they’d never done anything like that before. Just like the documentary, it also granted an inside look into the everyday life of the superstar pair.

Kanye asked Kim, “If you could choose not to be a celebrity and have a more peaceful but happy life out of the spotlight, would you do it?” She answered, “I think I live an awesome life. Even in my darkest of times I don’t regret putting myself out there for the world to see. People have shared with me over the years how much it has helped them to feel less alone when dealing with their own adversity.”

During the interview, the pair discussed Kim’s new venture, educating herself to become a lawyer. “I’ve always been interested in law, in studying law,” the reality star said. “As I started to become interested in criminal justice reform, I felt the urge to learn more so that I could do more. I knew that the only way I could help was if I was really educated on the laws and the system.”

Kim then added, “But I know that my dad would love it, he would be so proud. He would totally be the one helping me study and would have taken the job of helping me with my flashcards away from you. He would have been so happy to do that.” Sadly, the reality star’s father didn’t live to see her follow in his footsteps. Robert Kardashian died in 2003 after a battle with esophageal cancer.

Kanye also asked Kim if “reading unpleasant things” about themselves in the news ever upset her. She answered, “When it’s about my family, I get really protective. Most of the time when things are so baseless or absurd, I have a good laugh. But as far as dealing with it on a daily level for me, I’m pretty content.”

And then, the couple began speaking about how they first encountered each other. “What did you think of me the first time we met?” Kanye asked his wife. Kim said, “This was before you released your first album and you were known as a music producer. I was really shy.”

Kim went on, “You thought I was [R&B singer] Brandy’s assistant, which I wasn’t. Ever since you said that, it’s everywhere… Like, ‘Kim is Brandy’s assistant.’ I was her friend and stylist. I thought you were attractive, nice, very charming, really funny, powerful. I was in awe of you, but I was really shy, quiet, and a little nervous, to be honest.”

Kanye then asked his wife the sweetest question, “How did you realize I was the one for you?” Kim answered, “When I went to New York and we went to dinner and the movies, it was just so much fun. I remember I wore a Givenchy feather jacket and leather pants. It was super chill and so effortless being together.”

Kim then said much the same thing she would say in the E! True Hollywood Story documentary. “After spending that whole week together, I realized you were the one and then I was like, ‘Damn, why did I waste so much time and energy?’” she told her husband. “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”

Kanye and Kim also discussed their family. “Growing up, I always thought I wanted four kids. And then after we had North, I didn’t think we were going to have another one because of how difficult the pregnancy was,” the reality star said. “After we had Saint, I for sure thought we were done. But then we kept going – and now we have four.”

Kim talked happily about the individual personalities of her four children and what traits they had inherited from their parents. “Hopefully they will have little bits of us and lots of themselves,” she said. And then Kanye asked her, “How do you want our children to remember us?” The mom-of-four said she thought about that all the time.

The reality star said, “I often reflect on the most amazing childhood I had. […] I want them to always be able to look back and say, ‘I had the most awesome life. My parents gave me all of the tools to be great and happy in life. They were fun, good, awesome parents and they were always there.’” All things considered, then, those kids are lucky their father wasn’t warned away from their mother.
