21. John Leguizamo and Steven Seagal (Worst)

Arguably few other actors are as candid as John Leguizamo – at least when it comes to talking about his peers. And Kurt Russell, Leonardo DiCaprio and Arnold Schwarzenegger are just a few of the co-stars who no doubt felt their ears burning when Leguizamo penned his 2006 autobiography Pimps, Hos, Playa Hats and All the Rest of My Hollywood Friends. That said, the Golden Globe nominee saved his biggest smackdown for Steven Seagal, with whom he worked on 1991’s Out for Justice.

Leguizamo wrote of Seagal, “We come in for rehearsals, and he says, ‘I’m in command. Everything I say is law. Anybody doesn’t agree?’ I was like, ‘Bwahahaha.’ I started cracking up… He came up and he Taekwondo’ed my ass against the brick, and he [hit me with his elbow]. I really wanted to say how big and fat he was and that he runs like a girl, but I didn’t because all I could say was, ‘Why?!’”

20. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jason Robards (Best)

A whole host of tributes poured in for Philip Seymour Hoffman when the Oscar winner tragically died in 2014. Owning Mahowny co-star John Hurt, for example, hailed Hoffman as “an extraordinary talent – directorially as well as an actor,” while Jim Carrey described the late star as a “beautiful, beautiful soul.” And Hoffman wasn’t averse to dishing out compliments during his lifetime, either. Indeed, he once told Entertainment Weekly that working with Jason Robards on Magnolia was one of his all-time highlights.

Image: via IMDb

Hoffman praised his co-star by saying, “[Robards] was so much fun to be around and more professional than most actors, with his preparation and the fact that he just wanted to act… When you start out, you look at some actors’ careers, and you say, ‘I want to follow the path they’ve taken.’ And he’s one of those guys. I feel a kinship with him in the way he never abandoned the theater, and he reignited that urge in me.”

19. Naya Rivera and Lea Michele (Worst)

All-singing, all-dancing phenomenon Glee may have looked like a whole lot of fun to make on screen – but the reality was very different indeed. You see, the Fox show was plagued by behind-the-scenes drama during its six-year run. And according to Naya Rivera, who played cheerleader Santana Lopez, Lea Michele was often the star at the center of the storm.

Image: via IMDb

Yes, in her 2016 autobiography Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up, Rivera made an interesting claim. Specifically, she alleged that Michele, a.k.a. diva Rachel Berry, once threatened to go to the Screen Actors Guild to complain about the show’s working conditions. Referring to her co-star, Rivera wrote, “So I guess you can throw a bitch fit, lock yourself in your trailer, stall production yet still allegedly find time to leak stories to the press.” Ouch.

18. Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson (Best)

In 2007 Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson finally hit the screen together in the Rob Reiner-directed The Bucket List. The comedy-drama saw the two Hollywood legends play terminally ill friends who embark on a road trip in order to achieve all of the things that they want to do before they die. And it turns out that Nicholson helped Freeman tick off one particular wish in real life, too.

Image: Warner Bros via IMDb

According to Vulture, Freeman was delighted when he heard who the co-headliner of the film would be. The Oscar winner said, “I think we all have a private bucket list. It may not be written down, but I’m constantly checking them off. I just checked off Jack Nicholson. Every day was a holiday because I’ve been praying at the temple of Jack ever since Five Easy Pieces.”

17. Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman (Worst)

As film aficionados know, Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman starred together in Kramer vs. Kramer – one of the all-time great divorce movies. It turns out, though, that the two actors’ relationship off set was almost as fractious as the one they portrayed on screen. And in a 2011 interview with CBS News, Streep revealed just how intense working with Hoffman had been.

Image: Columbia Pictures/Getty Images

The three-time Oscar winner reflected on one troubling moment in particular, telling the network, “In [one] scene, [Hoffman] slapped me. When I see the movie [now], I see the imprint of his hand on [my face] – not in the take that they used, but I still see the hand in the previous take… I think [Hoffman is] very, very gifted, [but] it wasn’t the most fun I’ve ever had on film.”

16. Emily Blunt and Susan Sarandon (Best)

Australian thriller Irresistible saw Emily Blunt play Mara – a disturbed young woman who threatens to disrupt the life of Susan Sarandon’s book illustrator Sophie. Thankfully, though, the British actress wasn’t quite so hostile towards the Oscar winner in real life. In fact, Blunt had nothing but kind words to say during an interview with Aussie site The Age.

Image: Lester Cohen/Getty Images

While promoting the Melbourne-shot mystery, Blunt described her co-star as a “force of nature” – which in this case was intended to be a compliment. The future Mary Poppins, who spent ten weeks on set with Sarandon, continued, “[She was] amazing to work with. We just had such a laugh. And she’s frighteningly smart.”

15. Tyrese Gibson and James Franco (Worst)

James Franco is renowned for throwing himself into his performances, but he may have gone a little too far while shooting 2006 military movie Annapolis. That’s according to co-star Tyrese Gibson, who would recall the climactic boxing scene in which he felt the full force of Franco’s commitment. Gibson said in an interview with Elle magazine, “Whenever we’d have to get in the ring for boxing scenes, and even during practice, the dude was full-on hitting me.”

Image: via IMDb

To give him some credit, though, Franco did acknowledge that his behavior on set wasn’t exactly commendable. Speaking to GQ, the star admitted, “I was probably a jerk. I was not purposely cruel to [Gibson], but I was probably so wrapped up in my performance that I was not as friendly as I could have been.”

14. Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman (Best)

Tom Hardy has worked with Gary Oldman twice, and he seemingly couldn’t be happier about this fact. Hardy has certainly been complimentary about his fellow British actor, anyway – particularly when talking about how the two crossed paths on Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. In an interview with website Flicks and Bits, the star claimed, “We had to go back and re-shoot the entire scene that I had with [Oldman] in that. Which is good because I spent my entire experience with [Oldman] staring at him, and not returning any lines, because I think he’s basically God, you know?”

Image: Dave Hogan/Getty Images

However, Hardy had to get a little more aggressive with Oldman when they shared the screen again in The Dark Knight Rises. The Bane actor recalled, “I was kind of playing God, so I kind of ignored him, kicked him a bit – that kind of thing. But Gary Oldman is one of my heroes, completely. I did nothing but gleam from him.”

13. Bill Murray and Lucy Liu (Worst)

One of the most notorious on-set clashes of the ’00s emerged during the frothy remake of a 1970s girl-power classic. Lucy Liu – who joined Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore in the line-up of Charlie’s Angels – reportedly attacked Bill Murray physically after taking umbrage with one of his remarks. Apparently, the deadpan actor allegedly called Liu’s acting abilities into question.

Image: via IMDb

Yet while neither party has ever officially confirmed that such an incident took place, Murray did admit that there had been friction between the pair while speaking to The Times in 2009. He said, “Look, I will dismiss you completely if you are unprofessional and working with me. When our relationship is professional, and you’re not getting that done, forget it.”

12. Chris Evans and Ioan Gruffudd (Best)

Chris Evans is renowned for being one of the nicest guys in Hollywood, so it’s perhaps no surprise that he found it difficult to narrow down his all-time favorite co-star. During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Evans said, “I mean, that’s so tough. That’s so tough, because everyone in the Avengers movies, I mean, I love. From Downey to Hemsworth to Ruffalo to Renner to Scarlett – there are so many people that I love from the Marvel franchise.”

Evans did eventually settle on one name though, and it was Welshman Ioan Gruffudd. The Captain America star said, “[Gruffudd] was in Fantastic Four with me. There’s something about him that is just so funny. He’s so fun and so funny. And just, every single day, he made me laugh. Maybe it’s just my memory being somewhat nostalgic, but I just have such fond memories of coming to work every day and [him] just cracking me up.”

You see, while speaking on Bret Easton Ellis’ podcast, the British actor admitted that he hadn’t been the ideal co-star on the original film. Pettyfer explained, “I did my work, and then I sat in the corner and listened to music because I’d been told that anything I do was wrong by my reps. And I was very insecure as a human being.”

Pettyfer continued, “That also gave me a bad rep because they said, ‘Oh, Alex thinks he’s f**king better than everybody else because he doesn’t speak to anyone.’ And that’s not true. I was genuinely nervous and scared to be myself.” And things went from bad to worse when the actor failed to pay his landlord – who just so happened to be a close pal of Channing Tatum – on time. Tatum even reportedly sent Pettyfer an email that read, “Pay the f**king money. Don’t be a clown.”

10. Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Best)

There appeared to be something of a love-in on the set of 2010 psychological thriller Shelter. Why? Well, in an interview with The Irish Independent, Julianne Moore revealed that she was a big fan of co-star Jonathan Rhys Meyers, explaining, “I think his work has just been wonderful. And he’s been serious and fun and has just done some really terrific and interesting and surprising work. He’s been lovely.”

And Rhys Meyers – who played a man with multiple personality disorder in the movie – also sang the praises of Moore, who portrayed his character’s psychiatrist. He said, “[She’s] amazing – one of the main reasons to do the film. [Moore’s] very strong, but strong in a very maternal way. She’s an extraordinary actress.”

9. Betty White and Bea Arthur (Worst)

Bea Arthur’s Dorothy was famous for using her sharp tongue against Betty White’s Rose in classic 1980s sitcom The Golden Girls. As it turns out, though, certain parts of the role weren’t exactly a stretch for the formidable Arthur. Apparently the late actress could only just tolerate her co-star at best, as White revealed in a 2011 interview.

“[Arthur] had a reserve. She was not that fond of me,” White quite happily admitted during a chat with The Village Voice. “She found me a pain in the neck sometimes. It was my positive attitude – and that made Bea mad sometimes. Sometimes if I was happy, she’d be furious!”

8. Anthony Mackie and Gina Rodriguez (Best)

While Anthony Mackie made co-star Gina Rodriguez cry during a 2018 interview to promote Miss Bala, thankfully they were happy tears. You see, the actor couldn’t stop raving about the Jane the Virgin lead while discussing her voice casting in Carmen Sandiego. Mackie told Entertainment Tonight, “I’m excited for her. I feel like a role like that, and for the things that Gina’s doing in this day and age and in this business, it’s kind of revolutionary.”

Mackie continued, “For so long, so many people in this business have been given opportunities, and they’ve just sat back waiting for Hollywood to give them a job. And to see someone of her age, of her experience, to go out and make that – that’s dope.” Rodriguez responded, “He told me to bring tissue, ’cause he was gonna make me cry. Well, you done did it.”

7. Terrence Howard and Robert Downey Jr. (Worst)

In the first Iron Man movie, Tony Stark’s best friend James Rhodes was played by Terrance Howard. When the character returned to the big screen for the 2010 follow-up, however, Rhodes looked very different indeed. That time around, Don Cheadle was chosen to assume the role – a decision which unsurprisingly dismayed the replaced star. And Howard holds Downey Jr. entirely responsible for his ousting.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Howard told host Andy Cohen, “It turns out that the person that I helped become Iron Man, when it was time to re-up for the second one, took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out.” However, Downey Jr. denied that he had had any involvement in the decision during a chat with MTV News.

6. Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal (Best)

They say you should never meet your heroes. But tell that to Tom Holland, who developed a strong bromance with the man with whom he had always wanted to share the screen: Jake Gyllenhaal. The pair forged a friendship on the set of Spider-Man: Far from Home, with Holland later revealing to Entertainment Weekly that his acting idol had been “more than [he] ever could have expected.”

And Gyllenhaal has often returned the many compliments. While appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Oscar nominee discussed how much he enjoyed working on the superhero film with his young co-star. Gyllenhaal said of Holland, “He’s great, dude. He’s awesome. He’s the nicest guy. I’m super into him as Spider-Man.”

5. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey (Worst)

Famous for that iconic lift, Dirty Dancing’s Johnny and Baby are unarguably one of the defining on-screen couples of the 1980s. However, the actors who played the pair, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, weren’t exactly a match made in heaven off screen. And in his autobiography, the late actor revealed why he didn’t get on with his co-star.

“We did have a few moments of friction when we were tired or after a long day of shooting,” wrote Swayze. “[Grey] seemed particularly emotional, sometimes bursting into tears if someone criticized her. Other times, she slipped into silly moods, forcing us to do scenes over and over again when she’d start laughing.”

4. Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt (Best)

Can there be any greater honor for an actor than to be compared with multiple Oscar winner and all-round nice guy Tom Hanks? Well, Chris Pratt was bowled over when his The Magnificent Seven co-star Denzel Washington did just that. While appearing on GMA After Hours on ABC Radio, Washington told host Lynda Lopez, “[Pratt] is great. I can see why he’s so popular.”

Washington continued, “There’s another actor that I worked with, whatever, 20 years ago, by the name of Hanks who had that same quality about them – that you just really like them. Aside from their obvious talent, they’re good people, and it comes across on screen.” In response, Pratt hailed Washington as a “legend” who “may be the greatest living actor.”

3. Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts (Worst)

Julia Roberts may be renowned for her romcoms, but Hugh Grant wasn’t exactly enamored with his co-star when filming Notting Hill. Yes, during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, the British actor told host Andy Cohen that sparks certainly didn’t fly when he and Roberts locked lips in the 1999 movie.

Acknowledging that Roberts wouldn’t be particularly pleased with his confession, Grant began by saying that the actress had a large mouth and that he “was aware of a faint echo as [he] was kissing her.” Then, when asked whether he was still in contact with Roberts, Grant replied, “No. I would be, I suppose, but I probably made too many jokes about the size of her mouth. She might hate me by now.”

2. Emma Watson and Tom Hanks (Best)

Thankfully, Tom Hanks seems to be just as inherently likeable off screen as he is on it. Indeed, Paul Bettany, Taraji P. Henson and Aaron Eckhart are just a handful of the co-stars who have backed up his nice guy reputation in various interviews. And Emma Watson added herself to that list in 2017 after appearing alongside Hanks in The Circle – although she would admit that she had initially been skeptical about the experience.

The former Harry Potter star told E! News, “There’s no way [Hanks is] going to be as nice as everyone says he is and whatever else. And then he was! He’s so generous and funny and easy-going, and he’s all the things you would want him to be. So I’m very happy to be able to report that to you sincerely, because it would have broken my heart, I think, if Tom wasn’t Tom.”

1. Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves (Best)

Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves haven’t stopped singing each other’s praises since they first appeared on screen together in Speed back in the mid-1990s. In an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Bullock reflected on her experiences shooting the movie, saying, “I think about how sweet Keanu Reeves was and how handsome he was. It was really hard for me to really be serious. He’d look at me, and I’d [giggle].”

And unbeknownst to Bullock, the feeling was mutual. During a separate appearance on the same show, Reeves admitted, “She obviously didn’t know I had a crush on her, either.” The actor went on to add, “She’s such a wonderful person [and] such a wonderful actress.” Both parties are glad, however, that they didn’t take their strong friendship to the next level.
