While Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds aren’t shy about revealing some aspects of their lives to the public, they nonetheless appear to keep a lot to themselves. And even though Reynolds’ witty presence on Twitter has won him a legion of fans, he doesn’t tend to give his followers a great deal of insight into what goes on at home with his wife and two daughters. At a 2019 movie premiere, however, the Deadpool star and his actress wife decidedly bucked that trend by making a bold statement about the future of their family.
Of course, Lively and Reynolds had established themselves as household names well before that event took place. Lively, for example, had first found fame playing Serena van der Woodsen in the teen drama Gossip Girl; Reynolds, on the other hand, had honed his craft for years prior to landing his breakthrough role as the eponymous college senior in National Lampoon’s Van Wilder.
And it was on the set of another movie that the future husband and wife first became acquainted. Yes, after meeting during the filming of Green Lantern, Reynolds and Lively hit it off – so well, in fact, that the pair ultimately wed in 2012. Then, two years after tying the knot, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named James; they would add to their brood again in September 2016 with the birth of daughter Inez.
But it should be noted that Lively was no stranger to Hollywood even before her starring role in Gossip Girl. She belongs to a showbiz family, you see, with her father, Ernie, working as an actor and her mom, Elaine, employed as a talent spotter. What’s more, Lively’s brother and three half-siblings have all also had involvement with the entertainment industry at one point or another.
It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that a young Lively followed in her family’s footsteps by attending her parents’ acting classes. And stardom appeared to beckon, too, at the age of ten, when she received her first role in 1998’s Sandman, which her father directed. Yet despite the performing arts playing a major part in Lively’s formative years, the future star initially had no intention of pursuing acting as a career.
The universe seemingly had other plans, however. After a little encouragement from her brother Eric, you see, Lively bagged the role of Bridget in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. And the film adaptation of the Ann Brashares novel earned Lively some recognition to boot – including a Teen Choice Award nomination.
Then, of course, Lively won the lead role of Serena van der Woodsen in Gossip Girl. And while the young actress had initially been reluctant to take the part – she’d already deferred her place at university for a year – the decision proved to be a fateful one. After all, the series would go on to become a major hit, making Lively a huge star in the process.
Lively later capitalized on this small-screen success by bagging a number of film roles, including a part in 2010’s The Town. And, of course, her part in Green Lantern – in which she portrayed Carol Ferris – not only added to her resume, but it also led to her meeting her future husband.
But Reynolds’ background was somewhat different to that of the woman who would ultimately become his wife. For starters – and unlike Lively’s clan – his family were not involved in the entertainment industry at all. Instead, his mom, Tammy, was a retail salesperson while his dad, Jim, worked as a food wholesaler. Regardless of these humble beginnings, though, Reynolds stepped out on his own at a young age in order to forge a living as an actor.
And in 1991 the teenage Reynolds seemed to be going places when he began to star on screen as Billy Simpson in Canadian teen drama Hillside. Nor did his career stop there, as he went on to earn future roles in The X-Files, the Sabrina the Teenage Witch movie and a TV adaptation of Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood.
Reynolds’ career took a turn for the comedic, however, when he landed a lead role in ABC’s Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place, following that up with his turn in National Lampoon’s Van Wilder. And in 2004 he further proved his versatility as Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity – the first of what would be several superhero movies for the star.
Yes, as fans know, Reynolds subsequently appeared alongside Hugh Jackman in 2010’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This was followed closely by the starring role in 2011 release Green Lantern. And, of course, his time playing the DC Comics hero marked the start of his real-life adventure with co-star Lively.
But while Lively and Reynolds played on-screen love interests in Green Lantern, both were actually spoken for in real life. Lively, for instance, was in a relationship with her Gossip Girl co-star Penn Badgley at the time, while Reynolds was still in his first marriage to Scarlett Johansson. As a result, then, the pair were just friends to begin with.
And while both Lively and Reynolds found themselves single and ready to mingle a year after their initial meeting, they still didn’t immediately take advantage of the situation. Instead, the celebrity pals decided to go on a double date with two other people, as Reynolds later related on Entertainment Weekly’s SiriusXM show.
“She was on a date with another guy, and I was on a date with another girl,” Reynolds said in 2016 by way of revealing what had gone down. “That was the most awkward date because we were just like fireworks coming across. It was weird at first, but we were buddies for a long time. I think it’s the best way to have a relationship – to start as friends.”
So, romance between Lively and Reynolds finally blossomed. And in September 2012 – just around a year after their unintended first date – the pair took the next step in their relationship by marrying in South Carolina. Lively appeared to be content with being a newlywed, too, judging by comments she made to Allure in 2012. “I’ve never been happier in my life,” she divulged to the magazine.
But things were about to get a whole lot happier for Lively and Reynolds when their first child – a daughter – arrived in December 2014. The couple decided to name their little girl James in honor of Reynolds’ father, who would sadly pass away following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease in October 2015.
And although James is usually considered a boy’s name, Reynolds nevertheless claimed that the moniker “felt right” for his first-born daughter. In 2018 he told website Mr Porter, “All family relationships come with some complications. For better or worse, all roads lead to here. At the end of the day, it’s easier to focus on the good stuff than the bad. My father died soon after my daughter was born, but he got to see her, which makes me happy.”
Then, three months after James’ birth, Reynolds opened up about fatherhood in a 2015 interview with E! News. And in the chat, he admitted that he was struggling with sleep deprivation – even comparing himself to a zombie. Regardless, though, the actor claimed that the lack of rest was all worth it for his precious little girl.
“There have been times where I woke up [and I] literally had no idea I had been walking for five minutes,” Reynolds told E! News. “But you love it. You wake up in the middle of the night, [and] you got a big stupid smile on your face. I was telling someone else that. Anything else that woke you up every 45 minutes, you’d kill it. But when it’s a baby, it’s the best thing that ever happened to you.”
Lively was forthcoming about parenthood, too, when she appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. And in the episode, which aired in April 2015, the new mom gushed about her little daughter to the host. “She’s the best!” Lively beamed. “I mean, you know, you have two daughters.”
That said, Lively was not so complimentary about her husband’s parenting skills. “He’s pathetic!” she quipped. “I do everything; he does nothing.” She added that the couple were in a competition to see whether James would first say “Mama” or “Dada.” “We’re total rivals,” Lively said. “‘Dada’ is banned in our house!”
But it appears that Lively’s denouncement of Reynolds’ parenting skills was taken in good humor. In any case, the couple expanded their numbers in September 2016 when they welcomed a second daughter, whom they named Inez. And the family of four appeared publicly in December that year, when Reynolds received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
During the ceremony, Reynolds paid tribute to his family in his acceptance speech. First addressing his spouse, the actor said, “I want to thank my wife, Blake, who is sitting right there [and] who is everything to me. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. You make everything better.”
Continuing, Reynolds then thanked Lively for making him a dad. “You make absolutely everything in my life better,” he reiterated. “You’ve given me two of the most incredible children that I could ever hoped to have. You’ve made me the father of my dreams when I thought I only had ‘fun uncle’ potential.”
But displaying his signature wit, Deadpool star Reynolds concluded his otherwise warm and fuzzy speech with a joke. “You are the best thing – the best thing – that has ever happened to me, second only to this star,” he said. “It’s the Hollywood Walk of Fame! Cut me some slack here.”
However, even though James and Inez were present at the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, Lively and Reynolds have tended to keep their family life pretty private. They have chosen to live away from Hollywood, in fact, in favor of upstate New York, where they reportedly dwell in a mansion beyond the town of Bedford.
But despite their idyllic family life, Lively and Reynolds, as actors, often have to spend time away from home. However, they have a simple rule to ensure their brood can stay together. In an interview with People in 2019, Reynolds revealed that the couple never work at the same time.
Explaining their family routine to the magazine, Reynolds said, “Blake and I don’t do movies at the same time. If she is doing a movie in Thailand, and I am doing a movie in Vancouver, we would just never see each other. We operate as a unit, and that works really well for us.”
And by taking it in turns to work, Lively and Reynolds are able to travel together. “The kids stay with us, and the family stays together, and that is where home is,” Reynolds explained to People. “So if we are in Spain or Utah or New York, as long as we are together, we’re home.”
As a result of their seemingly harmonious relationship, then, Lively and Reynolds have become firm fan favorites among many celebrity watchers. However, the couple surprised even their most avid of followers at the start of May 2019. On that occasion, you see, Lively publicly debuted a blossoming new baby bump.
Yes, Lively appeared to confirm that she and Reynolds were now expecting their third child at the New York premiere of Detective Pikachu. And so while Reynolds is undoubtedly the star of that film – he provides the voice of the lead character, after all – his wife was the one to steal most of the attention on the red carpet.
Dressed in a metallic Pikachu-yellow gown, Lively showcased her baby bump in the form-fitting number. And perhaps to ensure that all eyes were firmly on her, the actress added extra sparkle to her outfit with the help of some Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. It’s fair to say, though, that her bright smile was her best accessory by far.
In fact, neither Lively nor Reynolds appeared able to contain their happiness at the premiere, with the couple continuing to beam as they posed for photographs. At one point, too, Reynolds was spotted gazing at his pregnant wife while she placed a protective palm upon her belly.
And needless to say, Lively and Reynolds’ baby news sent some fans into a complete frenzy. Various media outlets got in on the act, too, by attempting to guess the couple’s due date based on Lively’s appearance at the premiere. According to PopSugar, Lively was probably “three to five months along” – meaning her baby would be due in the fall.
But no matter when their third child does finally arrive, Lively and Reynolds will likely keep the birth quiet for a while. The duo took months to confirm the name of their second baby, at any rate, which suggests that they’ll probably be in no rush to reveal the details of their newest addition to their clan. Instead, they’ll likely focus on adjusting to their new life as a family of five.
And while news of Lively’s third pregnancy may have come as a shock to some, she has certainly hinted at the desire for a large family of her own. As reported by Elle back in 2016, Lively once joked, “I’m one of five kids. My husband is one of four, so we’re officially breeders. You can go on our website, and we will give you some of our children.”
However, although it seems that Lively is capable of laughing about her growing brood, she’s also extremely defensive of her daughters. And in a 2016 interview with Marie Clare, the actress said, “That’s the thing that I feel most protective of, and the thing that I feel is the most exposed when I feel exploited.”
With that in mind, Lively and Reynolds have tried to keep their children shielded from public life. Commenting on intrusion from the paparazzi when James was little, Lively told Marie Claire, “It’s hard, [but] it’s another thing when it’s our child. She didn’t have the opportunity to make a decision about what she wants.”
Ultimately, in fact, all Lively and Reynolds want is to raise their children to be as grounded as possible – and this likely includes the new baby on the way. “Ryan had a nice, normal upbringing, and we want our kids to have the same normal life that we had,” Lively explained to Marie Claire. “We don’t ever want to rob them of what we had because we’d feel really selfish.”
