When Tom Cruise appeared on TV’s The Late Late Show in July 2018, he had some interesting things to share. After giving the lowdown on his love of stunts, he told viewers that he was fond of presenting a strange gift to his fellow stars. And both Mission: Impossible – Fallout co-star Angela Bassett and host James Corden could confirm the truth of the matter about Cruise’s curious habit.
During the interview, Cruise told Corden all about why he enjoyed doing his own stunts. He said, “I want to entertain an audience, and we come up with great stories and different things we can do and [we are] able to put a camera in places that you normally can’t.” And the star explained that his devotion to putting it all on the line had developed during his childhood.
Corden pointed out that Cruise had learned his risk-taking ways from his mom. The star answered, “She wasn’t necessarily a daredevil, but she had just a wonderful sense of adventure and she was someone that always the cup was half full.” And it turned out that Cruise had taken his mom skydiving while filming the movie Days of Thunder. And to top off the adventure, he had managed to surprise his sisters by sending them video footage of his mother’s leap from the plane.
But Cruise’s devotion to stunts means hard training, and when asked whether he has food handy, he explained all about his peculiar habit. He said, “What I like to do is send people, like, cakes, stuff like that.” Bassett agreed that he’d done exactly that, sending her a delicious comestible to her. And Corden confirmed the habit, saying that Cruise had gifted him with a chocolate cake at the 2018 Grammys.
Cruise told Corden why he’d developed the habit. He said, “I love sugar, but I can’t eat it because when I’m training, you know, I’m doing all these movies. So I send it to everyone. I send it to the stunt team.” But what’s in it for the star? He added, “And I wait for the calls. Like, tell me about it.”
