Whether or not you believe in her psychic abilities, there’s no denying the fact that Theresa Caputo is one of the most prominent mediums of the present day. Indeed, Caputo has practically built her brand on her alleged capacity to speak to the dead. Lately, however, the TLC star has dealt with personal problems that relate very much to the world of the living. And as a result, she’s revealed some gut-wrenching news about her 28-year marriage.
Channeling spirits from the afterlife may seem an outlandish prospect to most people, but Long Island native Caputo claims that she’s always had the ability to do just that. From an early age, in fact, the medium could allegedly see and hear things that other mere mortals couldn’t.
With this in mind, it’s perhaps no surprise that Caputo has looked to turn her supposed psychic powers into something lucrative. And in 2011 that’s exactly what she did. Appearing on the hit TLC reality show Long Island Medium, Caputo practically emerged out of nowhere to become one of the most popular spirit channelers on television.
And while speaking to The Huffington Post in 2015, Caputo said of Long Island Medium, “I thought I was going to film a couple of shows and I would go on with my life. I didn’t think I would be touring on a tour bus doing live shows every night and changing thousands of peoples’ lives.”
Nonetheless, the show is still alive and well in 2018. What’s more, it’s not the only entertainment medium – no pun intended – in which Caputo has found success. She’s also a New York Times bestselling author, for instance, having releasing three books to date.
Unfortunately, though, Caputo has also been the subject of much criticism and ridicule throughout her career. This has largely related to the unconventional methods that she uses and the supernatural abilities she claims to possess. But while her professional work may divide opinion, perhaps some are are more likely to admire the commitment that she has shown to her husband for 28 years.
That’s right: Caputo and her partner Larry made the ultimate commitment to each other back in 1989. That means that the two said their vows almost three decades ago, and such a long-lasting relationship is uncommon in the entertainment business.
Fans of Long Island Medium will be privy to the pair’s relationship, too, as Larry also appears in the show alongside his wife. And between renewing their vows, swapping lifestyles for 24 hours and taking romantic strolls to the arcade, Caputo and Larry haven’t been shy about putting their love front and center on screen.
Furthermore, followers of the couple will be aware of their two children, Larry and Victoria – both of whom share a love of tattoos with their dad. Indeed, Larry Sr. told Inked magazine in 2015, “My daughter Victoria has more tattoos than my son, and she wants more.” He added, “She’s got a couple all over.”
In that same interview, Larry also opened up on his marriage to Caputo, saying, “To see how many people admire our relationship – I thought everybody’s relationship was like that, and it’s not. We’re very blessed. When the show came about, I thought I had nothing to offer. But I realize now that, as a couple and as a family, we have a lot to offer.”
Life has a habit of throwing a spanner in the works when you least expect it, however. And in 2017 Larry and Caputo showed that they weren’t immune to bad fortune, either. Sadly, in December of that year, they announced that they were separating following almost three decades of marriage.
Specifically, Larry and Caputo released a joint statement to Page Six to announce their split. This read, “After 28 years of marriage, we have decided to legally separate. We will always love each other and our two wonderful children. We are united in supporting each other and our family. Please respect our privacy during this time.”
This development had been alluded to earlier, however, in a November 2017 episode of Long Island Medium. In it, Caputo stated, “Since the last season of [the show] and through a period of time, Larry and I’s relationship had changed.”
The medium continued, “We’ve been there for each other, you know, through thick and thin. You know, good times, and right now are not such great times. I don’t understand it. I lay in bed, and I say to myself, ‘How did this happen? How did I get here?’”
And, as it happens, Larry would also address the issues surrounding his marriage. In particular, he did so during a December 2017 episode of Long Island Medium that aired just a day after the couple had announced their separation.
“We’re having a difficult time,” Larry explained on the show. “I think a lot of the frustration has to do with us not spending the time together anymore. Along with that comes the lack of communication, so it’s like losing your best friend. It’s hard.”
Larry went on, “As much as I try to busy myself so I’m not thinking about it, it’s still there. I know it’s very trying for both of us. I don’t want to make it just about me – I know it’s the same for Theresa also.”
Unfortunately, though, it seems as if these issues were just too hard to resolve for the couple. But while Caputo and Larry may have lost the spark in their relationship, they do nevertheless have two children who need to be taken into consideration at this tough time for the family.
Still, although Caputo’s personal life may be faltering as of late, her professional life continues to thrive. Long Island Medium is currently in its tenth season, for instance. And her latest book, Good Grief: Heal Your Soul, Honor Your Loved Ones, and Learn to Live Again, has proven popular, too.
In addition, Caputo continues to tour and perform her supposedly supernatural feats onstage. And while the medium may be criticized by those who feel that she’s giving false hope to people, she has nevertheless insisted that helping others is what spurs her on.
Indeed, Caputo told The Huffington Post in 2015, “This is me, this is who I am. I don’t consider this a job, I consider it just ‘me,’ really. It’s an honor and a privilege.” She added, “I think that now more people are open to it. It gives them a sense of peace and of connection to their own loved ones that have passed.” So even though her love life is currently turbulent, Caputo’s passion for what she does has seemingly never wavered.
