When Pablo Benitez took his girlfriend to see Ed Sheeran in concert, he had something very important to say to her. Tanya Prochshyn was going through a tough time, and seeing her favorite artist live might have taken her mind off it for a while. But then Sheeran stopped mid-song. His attention turned to the couple and what Benitez had just said to Prochshyn.
When Benitez took Prochshyn to see Sheeran in Saskatoon, Canada, it was the night before a major operation for his girlfriend. She had been diagnosed with a brain tumor and was due to undergo surgery the next morning. Benitez, however, was lucky to score tickets for the show at all. In fact, it was a chance encounter that got him there.
Sheeran had been out on the town the previous evening, enjoying Saskatoon’s nightlife. Benitez spotted the singer and told him of his girlfriend’s situation, his desperation for tickets and what he wanted to ask her. Sheeran then responded in a way that has become typical of the superstar: he gifted the stranger front row seats. Indeed, Sheeran has a reputation for giving back to his fans.
In June 2015, Sheeran had joined a fan he heard performing one of his songs in an Edmonton mall. And, despite keeping his own marriage a secret, the singer is happy to shine the spotlight on his fans. In November 2018 he stopped an intimate show to allow one gig-goer the opportunity to propose to his girlfriend. And it wasn’t the first time.
Benitez had asked Sheeran to play “Thinking Out Loud”, his girlfriend’s favorite song, at the Saskatoon concert in 2015. The singer obliged, but mid-way through, he stopped when he spotted the couple in the front row. Sheeran knew Benitez had just proposed to Prochshyn and paused to congratulate the couple to a cheering crowd. Benitez later tweeted Sheeran to confirm that she’d accepted.
