Media legend Oprah Winfrey has come a long way from her birth into poverty in Mississippi to her incredible wealth and influence. She certainly doesn’t have to scratch around for a buck, and can have anything she wants. But in April 2019 when host of TV’s The Daily Show Trevor Noah asked whether that meant she could no longer live a normal life, she gave an intriguing answer.

After dominating the world of chat with her top-rating talk program The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah had become the richest black person in the world. Her net worth in 2014 was estimated to be $2.9 billion, making her America’s richest self-made woman. She’s also well known for her charity, and she represents a voice that many follow when she speaks.

One thing that Oprah has been outspoken about is food. She’s a big supporter of Weight Watchers and a careful eater, promoting healthy food. In 2017 she released a line of food for the microwave called “O, That’s Good.” What made these sides and soups special was that they had healthy eats hidden inside them.

Given the care that Oprah takes over her diet, it’s not surprising that she can be picky about what she eats. Not only does she fly in English muffins from The Model Bakery in Napa Valley, but she takes her own bread wherever she goes. On top of that, she adores avocados, and she’ll also bring them along with her.

But they’re not just any avocados. When Trevor Noah asked her on her appearance on The Daily Show what she did in her life that was normal, she mentioned how expensive she found avocados. And what she revealed made clear why she has shared pictures of her with baskets of avocados a couple of times: she mitigates the cost by owning her own avocado orchard!
