Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney separated in July 2016 after a one-year engagement. Then, the following year, the singer confessed in her documentary, Five Foot Two, that her role in A Star Is Born had contributed to their break-up. So when A Star Is Born came out in 2018, Kinney seized his chance to reveal his true feelings about the hit movie.
But let’s start at the beginning. You see, Gaga’s real name is Stefani Germanotta, and she was born in Manhattan, New York, in March 1986. She got her big break in the music industry in 2008 with her debut album, The Fame, which produced the singles “Poker Face” and “Just Dance.” The album was also reissued the following year as The Fame Monster and contained eight new songs.
2011 then saw the release of Gaga’s second album, Born This Way. Importantly, one of the singles from that record was “You and I.” And it was during the filming of the music video for the track that she met Kinney.
Kinney is a little older than Gaga, having been born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in July 1981. You might first have seen him in his recurring role as Mason Lockwood in The Vampire Diaries. He’s also played parts in bigger movies, such as Zero Dark Thirty and The Other Woman.
Since 2012, though, Kinney has played Lieutenant Kelly Severide in Chicago Fire and has made appearances in spin-off shows Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med. But it was his portrayal of a mad scientist in Gaga’s “You and I” music video that saw him begin a long-lasting relationship with the singer.
And after being together for four years, Gaga and Kinney announced their engagement in 2015. She even shared a photo on Instagram that showed the heart-shaped diamond ring that the actor had proposed with. “Love is love is love,” the singer wrote in the caption.
However, the couple decided to end their engagement in July 2016. Gaga had coincidentally been filming her Netflix documentary, Five Foot Two, at the time. And she admits on film that she and Kinney had been having problems in their relationship.
“Me and Taylor are fighting, so that sucks,” she says early on in the documentary. “My threshold for bulls**t with men is just – I don’t have one anymore. In relationships, you have to move together.”
Later in Five Foot Two, Gaga confesses that the couple had split. She even says that when her career is going well, her relationships suffer. The singer adds that her past romances with Luc Carl and Matthew Williams had ended in a similar way.
Gaga also gave an insight into what went wrong in her romance with Kinney during a 2016 interview with CBS Sunday Morning. “I think women love very hard,” she said. “We love men, we just love with everything we have.”
Singer Gaga continued on the show, “Sometimes, I don’t know that love is met with the type of dignity that we wish it would be met with. You know, we’re not trying to make you less of a man, we just want you to love us as deeply and as wholesomely and as fully as we love you.”
But in Five Foot Two, Gaga simply says, “My love life has just imploded.” The way in which she expands on this is intriguing too. “I sold ten million [records] and lost [Williams],” she says. “I sold 30 million and lost [Carl]. I did a movie and lose [Kinney]. It’s like a turnover. This is the third time I’ve had my heart broken like this.”
It turned out that the “movie” Gaga had been speaking about was A Star Is Born. Bradley Cooper directed the 2018 movie and also plays the male lead. The film is a remake of the 1937 original and follows a 1954 version starring Judy Garland and a 1976 remake featuring Barbra Streisand.
But this imagining of A Star Is Born hit the big screen in October 2018. The movie was an instant hit and has so far earned more than $257 million at the box office. Critics have also praised the singer’s portrayal of struggling singer Ally Campana-Maine, who falls for the successful-yet-troubled country star Jackson Maine. Some even strongly tip Gaga for an Oscar for the role.
So with A Star is Born proving such a success, people perhaps wondered what Kinney’s take on it is. And before the movie even came out, Entertainment Tonight asked the actor how he feels about the buzz surrounding it. Yet Kinney insisted that despite their split, he is still supportive of Gaga.
“I’m only proud,” Kinney said on the show. “I want to see it do really well.” And he had a similar response when E! News asked him about Gaga’s movie following its release. “I could only wish her the best,” the star shared. “I am really proud.”
Kinney didn’t actually reveal whether he had seen A Star Is Born but acknowledged the excitement around it. The previous month, in fact, he had been unsure about the idea of purchasing a ticket to see it. “I don’t know, man,” he told E! News.
Nevertheless, over the past two years since their relationship ended, Kinney has continued to support Gaga. He went to her concert in 2017 when she performed in Chicago, for example. And during Five Foot Two, she received flowers from him on the day of her Super Bowl halftime show that same year.
For her part, Gaga dropped some clues to her relationship with Kinney in her 2016 album, Joanne. Yet she insisted that there were no hard feelings between them. “I would just say that my music on my album as well as all my albums is inspired by my personal life and this one more than others,” she told E! News in a 2016 interview. “I have said it before: I love Taylor so much, and he’s my best friend.”
While Kinney continues his role in Chicago Fire, Gaga is working on a new studio album and preparing for a Las Vegas residency. She has also moved on with her romantic life and is now engaged to Christian Carino, a talent agent. Along the way, it seems that the singer has learned some important lessons about love. As Gaga once said, “At the end of the day, you won’t be happy until you love yourself.”
