When Justin Bieber’s Car Broke Down In LA, Locals Soon Had Him Dancing To Their Tune

People have said many things about Justin Bieber throughout his incredibly successful career. But from recent events, it seems that one thing is clear: the pop star just can’t stop performing. Yes, even when Biebs’ flashy ride breaks down in the middle of a random Los Angeles neighborhood, the teen idol apparently simply has to bust a few moves. Don’t believe us? Well, here’s a look at how the Canadian star kept locals entertained as he waited to get back on the road.

Having conquered the entire world with his chart-topping fourth studio effort, Purpose, Bieber decided to take things a little easier in 2018. Not all that easy, though. After all, the Canadian singer still added to his catalog of hits by guesting on other artists’ records.

Firstly, in fact, the star teamed up with Poo Bear and Jay Electronica on “Hard 2 Face Reality,” which peaked at No.78 on the U.S. Hot 100. He then reached number five on the same chart with “No Brainer.” This track was in collaboration with DJ Khaled, Quavo and Chance the Rapper. Bieber and Khaled had previously scored a U.S. number one with “I’m the One,” too.

So while things were quieter on the professional front for Bieber in 2018, it was a completely different story in his personal life. In May of that year, for instance, the former teen idol reunited with old flame Hailey Baldwin. The pair had actually first stepped out together in January 2016 before seemingly going their separate ways later in the year.

But in 2018 the pair showed that they were far more serious second time around. After all, they got engaged just two months after reconnecting. And in September, reports began surfacing that Baldwin had acquired a marriage license. The rumors then continued to swirl that the celebrity couple had already walked down the aisle together.

The young lovers themselves continued to keep tongues wagging, too, thanks to personal comments on their social media accounts. Shortly after making headlines with their apparent wedding, for example, the daughter of Hollywood star Stephen Baldwin took to Twitter to deny that a union had taken place. But then rather mysteriously, she apparently immediately deleted the tweet.

In November 2018, however, Bieber appeared to officially confirm that the pair were now husband and wife. In an Instagram post, he wrote, “Happy late Thanksgiving to everyone. First Thanksgiving as a married man… First time both sides of the family have come together. Relationships are hard, and love isn’t always easy, but thank you Jesus for showing me how!”

And just 24 hours later the newlyweds made their first public appearance since Bieber’s announcement. This consequently made things even more crystal clear. According to Cosmopolitan, you see, the happy couple sported matching Mr. and Mrs. ice hockey jerseys while watching the Toronto Maple Leafs in action. They also kissed in full view of the jumbotron.

That same month, though, Bieber also made headlines for a slightly more everyday matter. In the first week of November 2018, in fact, the Grammy Award winner was driving in the L.A. neighborhood of Watts in a presumably very expensive vehicle when disaster struck. Yes, the car in question suddenly broke down.

Of course, most of us mere mortals would simply wait patiently inside our cars or at the roadside until breakdown assistance arrived on the scene. However, A-list pop stars apparently do things slightly differently. You see, Bieber seemingly used his unforeseen spot of downtime as an opportunity to boost his reputation among the locals.

Sure, Bieber may be a chart-topping, award-winning multi-millionaire and possibly one of the most famous people in the world. But the former teen idol was evidently keen to prove that he could still mix with us civilians. After all, he spent several hours simply hanging out with residents of the L.A. community that he’d found himself stranded in.

And Bieber did more than just pose for selfies, too. For reasons unknown, the star also decided to prove that he was in peak physical condition – by doing some press-ups. He then showed off his skills on the basketball court by shooting some hoops with a number of disbelieving locals.

Bieber further treated residents to a quick burst of the vocals that helped him to become one of the world’s biggest pop idols. Before launching into his press-ups routine, in fact, the star performed “Hold Tight” in front of the ever-increasing crowd. The song was the third release from the star’s 2013 compilation, Journals.

As you would expect, many viewers of the footage uploaded to various social media platforms were left green with envy. One particular Twitter user, named Chris, certainly wished that he’d been there at the time. He posted, “They got a free concert, an N.B.A. celebrity game, and they added push ups for no reason.”

Another Twitter user named Meelz was also impressed by the star’s relaxed attitude. He posted, “Bieber’s car breaks down in the hood, and he has the afternoon of his life, chilling with [people] who [are] just happy to see [him]. This could be an episode of Black-ish, like the John Ritter episode of The Cosby Show.”

But Bieber’s sartorial choices caused just as much of a stir as his social skills. Indeed, one particular video uploaded by a bystander in the L.A. community revealed that the pop icon was sporting some unlikely and unfashionable footwear at the time. Yes, no doubt to ensure maximum comfort, the star had been driving in slippers!

Bieber’s antics also gave fans the opportunity to become more accustomed to his new, daring haircut. Shortly before the incident, you see, the singer had unexpectedly shaved his head. It had been a move that had had some fans drawing comparisons with Britney Spears’ similarly dramatic shaven-headed look during her highly publicized episode in the mid-’00s.

But of course, nothing is straightforward when it comes to the world of Bieber. Initially, though, the response to his impromptu L.A. hangout was positive – with many on social media impressed by his willingness to mix with regular people. However, others believed that it was nothing more than a shameless publicity stunt.

One such sceptic was Tariq Nasheed, a media personality who has published several books about the dating game. An L.A. resident himself, Nasheed took to Twitter to put a different spin on the Bieber breakdown story. He began, “They are spreading a fake scenario that #JustinBieber was chilling in ‘the hood’ because his car broke down. That’s 100 percent false.”

Nasheed then revealed his theory as to why the star found himself in the midst of a particular L.A. neighborhood. He claimed, “A church group organized this P.R. stunt for Bieber to take photo ops down in Imperial Courts. They had to throw a little money around to get a pass.”

But some fans didn’t particularly care whether the breakdown was genuine or entirely fabricated. One user replied to Nasheed, “Whatever the reason, they look like they enjoyed his company. Black folks were not given any money from what I know, and it’s them I was referring to enjoying Bieber’s company.”

Another Twitter user acknowledged that Bieber was indeed in the neighborhood to attend a church outreach event. But they refuted the claim that any money had been exchanged. The user in question then uploaded an Instagram post screenshot advertising the event at the Watts Empowerment Center. And it didn’t feature Bieber’s name.

Undeterred, Nasheed declared, “Money WAS involved. They had to do it under the guise of contributing to the Watts Empowerment Center.” But the aforementioned Bieber defender wasn’t having any of it. In fact, he claimed that the star regularly plays football nearby and that his post-breakdown activities were simply a case of the singer paying it forward.

Another Twitter user also came to the defence of the Canadian – claiming that Bieber can’t win whatever he does. “[He] quietly does something kind, and it turns into something different always,” rabbitaprilmay said. “Knowing he’s a kind human, he continues to give back, but others would say forget about it. Not worth the hassle.”

But other users appeared to be just as sceptical as the man who first questioned Bieber’s antics. “Yeah, I knew something didn’t seem right with that story,” posted a user named Bigj_great. “Only saw little of it, but I’m like ‘What the hell was he doing driving through Watts in the first place?’”

Bieber, though, has reportedly been attending such Pentecostal events for several years. He is famously a close friend of Carl Lentz – the “rock-star pastor” who founded the hugely successful and influential Hillsong Church in the early 1980s in Australia. Lentz’s wife, Laura, has also forged a strong bond with Bieber’s new spouse.

And Bieber certainly hasn’t been afraid to talk about, share and promote his faith. Before getting together with Baldwin, for instance, the star had been pictured with other women on other occasions at the Sunday services of the Hillsong Church. He’s also discussed the positive impact that the organization and its founder has had on his life in Instagram posts.

Bieber has also become affiliated with several other Pentecostal megachurches and their founders. These include the Zoe Church’s Chad Veach and Churchome’s Judah Smith. The latter is actually responsible for leading the congregation at the church where Bieber was reportedly heading to play football when his car broke down.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Bieber has had car trouble, either. Just four months before the L.A. incident, in fact, the star was driving with Baldwin in Long Island, New York. And the pair were then briefly left stranded in the middle of a road in the Hamptons when their vehicle suddenly broke down.

On this occasion, though, Bieber didn’t partake in doing push-ups, playing basketball or bursting into song with various local residents. But he did choose to make himself useful. Yes, the star became an unlikely traffic warden as he directed other vehicles around his stricken car while waiting for the cops to arrive on the scene.

A Bieber fan managed to film the singer’s brief and highly unlikely stint as a traffic warden too. And the A-list pairing did eventually make it to their intended destination on that occasion. But People magazine reported that the breakdown could have cost the star anything up to the sum of a whopping $200,000!

Bieber has been at the center of several vehicle collisions over the years too. In March 2018, for instance, the singer was involved in a car crash while driving around L.A. Thankfully, though, the County Sheriff’s Department later confirmed that no report had been taken and no injuries had occurred at the scene.

Back in 2017, though, Bieber was apparently involved in a collision that did result in an injury to a paparazzi photographer. Maurice Lamont in fact claimed that he was struck by the star’s vehicle as he exited a Beverly Hills church service. Lamont said he was subsequently taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. However, Lamont seemingly appeared to take the alleged incident in good humor.

In an Instagram post, Lamont wrote, “Hanging in there everybody… Hour before my birthday hits, I get run over by Bieber. Isn’t that something? He’s a good kid, though. I think the truck was a little bit too big for him, though, ’cause there’s no way he could see over the front — the slope it was on.”

In Bieber’s defense, Lamont also wrote that the star did make sure that he was okay before leaving the scene. And the photographer seemed impressed by the singer’s supposed conduct. He added, “But like I said: He got out, he was compassionate, he’s a good kid, accidents happen. Hopefully everything works out here. Getting ready to go into X-ray right now!”

Yet despite Bieber’s own various car troubles, the young man isn’t averse to poking fun at other people’s vehicles. In December 2018, in fact, Bieber started an unlikely feud with tween pop sensation Jojo Siwa. And the design of her BMW was the root cause.

It seemed that Bieber was far from impressed by an Instagram post of Siwa’s. In it, Siwa revealed a vehicle adorned with both her own face and an array of bright colors. And in response to the photo, Bieber posted “Burn it” not just once, but twice. The YouTube star then decided to get her own back in an amusing way.

You see, Siwa later uploaded a photo that featured her sitting in the driving seat of the offending car. And next to her was none other than a cardboard cut out of Justin Bieber. The tongue-in-cheek image subsequently received more than 600,000 likes from her devoted army of fans.

It’s unknown whether Bieber was aware of Siwa’s fame when he made his initial comment. But he sure was after many of her fans leapt to her defense. So he swiftly issued an apology on Twitter which read, “I have nothing against you. It was the car and the colors I didn’t like. I really hope you didn’t think it was malicious or mean spirited.”

Yet Bieber has continued to cause controversy throughout 2019. In May, for instance, he claimed that Eminem simply didn’t get today’s rap generation. Why? Because of the hip-hop star’s dissing of Machine Gun Kelly and Lil Xan. Bieber was also criticized for describing Chris Brown’s infamous assault charge as a “mistake” in an Instagram post that also compared the R&B singer to both Tupac and Michael Jackson.
