Move over, Meghan and Harry! A shiny new celebrity couple is in town. That would be Nick Jonas, singer and former Disney Channel star, and Priyanka Chopra, one of the most popular actresses in India. They got engaged in 2018, and there’s no doubt that they make one seriously good-looking couple. But considering the pair had only known each other for a year or so before the engagement, how did their romance actually start?
And Jonas and Chopra are both very successful people in their own rights. In fact, in his youth, Jonas and his brothers Joe and Kevin were well-known teen heartthrobs. The Jonas Brothers, as they were called, were extremely popular with younger audiences – not to mention a huge hit for the Disney Channel.
Furthermore, when an adult Nick struck out on his own, it didn’t take long for him to become a sex symbol. Gone were the wholesome attitudes and the “purity rings” that had originally been a part of the Jonas Brothers’ appeal. Indeed, in 2014 he even appeared on OK! magazine’s list of the sexiest men alive.
And although Chopra is slightly less well known to Western audiences than Jonas is, she’s nevertheless a superstar in her native India. There, she’s known as a Bollywood actress and philanthropist who campaigns for women’s rights. Her success has brought her numerous accolades, too, including the Padma Shri – India’s fourth most prestigious civilian honor.
Then, in 2015 Chopra became the first South Asian actor to land a lead role in a U.S. network drama when she starred in ABC’s Quantico. And, in fact, it may well have been Quantico that indirectly led her to Jonas. In December 2017 Jonas explained to the Indo-Asian News Service that he and his future fiancée had “met through a mutual friend who [Chopra] did Quantico with.”
However, the couple’s first public appearance took place on May 1, 2017 at the Met Gala. They entered the event together, both wearing Ralph Lauren outfits; Jonas had donned a patterned suit, and Chopra was in a trench coat-style dress with a 20-foot train. And after the gala, interviewers were curious to find out what exactly was going on with the glamorous pair.
But Chopra played it safe. When she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on May 10, for instance, she mostly just joked about her relationship to the former teen idol. “Are you dating Nick Jonas? Isn’t he like, 11 years old?” Kimmel said. “We decided to go together because it was fun,” Chopra answered. “I didn’t ask his age. 11? I did not know that. Good to know.”
Around that same time, moreover, Jonas told a radio station that he was single. And that seemed to be the final word, too. Plus, both Jonas and Chopra had plenty of work keeping them busy in 2017; Chopra had Quantico and promo for the big-screen Baywatch reboot to contend with, while Jonas released the singles “Remember I Told You,” “Find You” and “Home” during that year.
But in May 2018 – a year after their joint appearance at the Met Gala – rumors about Chopra and Jonas suddenly began to circulate again. Us Weekly, in particular, reported that the two of them were actually dating. “It’s a good match, and they are both interested in each other,” an anonymous source told the magazine.
One photograph of the pair, which appeared on the Instagram account of actor Glen Powell, was particularly intriguing. It showed Chopra and Jonas on a yacht with a big group of people, looking very close to each other indeed. And although they may still just have been friends, the evidence to the contrary appeared to be mounting up.
Indeed, throughout June 2018, it became more and more obvious that the pair were together. Firstly, they kept commenting on each other’s Instagram posts with flirtatious-sounding messages and heart emojis. Then they were seen together at JFK International Airport, where it transpired that they were going to a Jonas family wedding.
It seemed that although they had only been dating for a few weeks, Jonas wanted Chopra to meet his family. “It’s a huge deal that Nick brought Priyanka to his cousin’s wedding,” a source told People magazine at the time. “He’s dated a lot over the last couple [of] years, but it’s never been anything serious, so this is a big step.”
And Jonas had reportedly met Chopra’s family as well. “They’re very happy. It’s getting serious,” a source told People in June 2018. Clearly, something was going on. Right around that time, Jonas uploaded a video clip of Chopra to an Instagram story and captioned it “Her” – alongside a heart-eyes emoji.
More and more rendezvous followed – and they were double dates with Nick’s brother Joe, too. At the beginning of July 2018, for instance, Chopra and Jonas were seen in New York City with Joe and his fiancée, Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner. Then, 12 days later, all four of them were seen hanging out at a restaurant in London.
After that, rumors of an engagement between the pair emerged; Jonas had apparently popped the question on Chopra’s birthday, July 18. And an insider spilled the details to People. Jonas was “very, very happy,” they said. “His friends and family have never seen him like this, and they’re all really excited for him.”
It took until August for the engagement to be completely confirmed, however, when Chopra shared pictures on her Instagram of her and Jonas’ roka ceremony in India. The roka is an traditional Hindu celebration that also acts as a way of announcing that a couple are to be married. “The only way to do this… with family and God. Thank you all for your wishes and blessings,” Chopra wrote on Instagram on August 19.
What’s more, it appears that Chopra’s family very much approve of Jonas. That’s according to the actress’ mother Madhu, who spoke to the newspaper Daily News and Analysis about the musician after the engagement news broke. “What more can a mother want! Nick is calm and mature. He’s a wonderful person, and everyone in the family just loves him. He’s so polite and respectful towards elders,” she said.
“I always trust Priyanka’s judgment; she’s not impulsive,” Madhu went on. “She gave it a lot of thought, and when she decided on something, I was sure it would be good.” During the interview, Madhu additionally confirmed that when the wedding took place, it would be a traditional Indian one.
And Turner also seemed thrilled to have Chopra become part of her family in the near future. “First I’m blessed with an incredible future brother-in-law, and now such a beautiful, inside and out, future sister-in-law,” she wrote on Instagram on August 18. “I’m so excited to welcome you into the family.”
For the moment, though, the date for Jonas and Chopra’s wedding is apparently yet to be set. “Both of them have work commitments right now which they need to finish,” Madhu said to Daily News and Analysis. “They will take some time to decide where they want it and when they want it.” But regardless of when the ceremony is held, it’s sure to be a magnificent affair, and afterwards they’ll hopefully have a long and happy life together.
