It’s April 2017 and Mercedes Edney, a woman from Charlotte, North Carolina, is struggling to improve her life. She starts a YouCaring page that comes to the notice of Chrissy Teigen. No one would expect the supermodel to do anything about Edney’s crowdfunding appeal, but the star’s response stuns Edney and leaves her helpless with tears.
Utah native Teigen has had a big career in modeling and TV ever since being spotted in a California surf shop. With nearly 12 million followers on Twitter and more than 26 million on Instagram, she’s also an active and popular user of social media. Since 2013 she’s been half of a celebrity marriage with singer John Legend, with the pair having two kids.
The two have a reputation for generosity: Teigen reportedly tipped her waitress $1,000 in an Ohio steakhouse late in 2017. Meanwhile, earlier that same year, Legend donated $5,000 to help settle lunch debts of Seattle students. Oftentimes, Teigen uses her social media platform to advocate for good causes, and her actions earned her the Baby2Baby Giving Tree Award in September 2019.
When Edney began a crowdfunding appeal in a bid to raise about $6,000 to attend college to further her career as a beautician, however, she doubtless didn’t expect to attract Teigen’s attention. But as it happens, Teigen learned of Edney’s ambitions, and what she did when she saw Charlotte resident’s web page shocked the would-be student.
Yes, Teigen saw that Edney had benefited from a few small gifts, so decided to pay the balance. She told the beautician, “I’ve seen this be your passion for such a long time now. So excited to see you fulfill your dream!” Little wonder that Edney was left in tears by Teigen’s kindness, telling her Instagram followers, “I haven’t been this happy in a very long time.”
