Celebrities Are Loving The Bottle Cap Challenge, But Ryan Reynolds’ Attempt Ended In Total Disaster

We’ve had the ice bucket challenge, the Harlem Shake and the mannequin challenge. And in 2019 a challenge involving a simple bottle cap became the latest online craze to gain a life of its own. And unsurprisingly, many famous faces soon got on board, including none other than Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds.

For those who haven’t yet witnessed any of the thousands of attempts that have been posted on the internet, the bottle cap challenge is a test of skill. In front of the camera, the participant must use the martial arts technique known as the roundhouse to kick a loosely-placed cap off its bottle. Of course, it’s not as simple as it looks.

Indeed, many celebs have made the task look easy, such as Jason Statham, or put their own unique spin on it, as Mariah Carey did. Several, however, have ended up wishing they hadn’t bothered. Step forward Ryan Reynolds. Here’s a look at the challenge that quickly swept the globe and one of its biggest epic fails.

The craze began in June 2019 when Farabi Davletchin, a Taekwondo instructor, uploaded an Instagram clip of himself performing a stunt which is unlikely to be in any martial arts handbook. Indeed, the Kazakhstani filmed himself kicking a bottle cap clean off the bottle using various moves including the roundhouse. And within a week, his video had been viewed more than 200,000 times.

Of course, Davletchin also uses his many talents for more conventional purposes. Indeed, after achieving a First Dan Black Belt in both Hapkido and Taekwondo, the martial artist went on to become a world champion in both disciplines. He’s also a KMS Kickboxing expert and spends much of his time training others to achieve peak fitness.

Davletchin was inspired to pursue his love of martial arts by one of the all-time greats. Indeed, in 2015, he told Sports.Kz that the movies of Bruce Lee were a huge influence in his formative years. And his mother eventually allowed him to take karate lessons after her attempts to steer him towards ballroom dancing failed miserably.

The young Davletchin learned karate from the age of seven until 13, before moving on to wrestling and judo. From there, he began learning taekwondo and aikido at age 15. Indeed, the Kazakhstani told Sports.Kz, “I have always been based on the philosophy of Bruce Lee. He said that he was not engaged in any particular martial art, they are for all people.”

Just a few days after the original post, Max Holloway, another martial artist, tweeted a clip of himself performing the same maneuver. The challenge further continued when he invited his musician friend John Mayer to copy the stunt. And it was here that the bottle cap challenge went truly viral.

Indeed, Mayer obliged the next day on Instagram with a clip which quickly racked up views of over four million. The popular singer-songwriter then asked Jason Statham, one of Hollywood’s biggest action heroes to repeat the impressive feat. And the Transporter star was only too happy to accept the challenge.

Unsurprisingly, Statham decided to put his own spin on the craze. Indeed, in a slow-motion clip posted on Instagram, the British tough guy can be seen using a backwards roundhouse kick to remove the bottle cap with the utmost precision. The actor’s effort took the meme to another level, garnering more than 11 million views in a single day.

However, it was Errolson Hugh, a clothing designer, that actually coined the term #bottlecapchallenge. The co-founder of Berlin-based apparel brand Acronym used the hashtag after posting his own attempt at Davletchin’s original stunt. Hugh then tweeted that he “saw @farakicks do it and tried it out. Came back two hours later and it had exploded.”

Of course, this wasn’t the first such challenge to sweep the globe. In previous years, challenges revolving around ice buckets, mannequins and flailing dance movements, just to name a few, took the web by storm. But unlike those aligned with particular charities or issues, the bottle cap challenge was simply designed for sheer fun.

Indeed, the bottle cap challenge had gathered so much momentum that just a few days into July, The New York Times reported on it. The increasing coverage subsequently inspired a whole host of other celebs to join in with the fun. These included R&B singer-flutist Lizzo, comedian Whitney Cummings and filmmaker Guy Ritchie.

Perhaps inevitably, Justin Bieber’s attempt racked up the most views. In fact, more than 20 million people watched the clip he posted on Instagram within just three days. The chart-topping singer also nominated another megastar, Tom Cruise, to post his own attempt. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Mission Impossible actor did not respond.

However, one celebrity did accept Bieber’s challenge, and that’s his wife, Hailey. And the model was keen to make sure that her attempt stood out from the crowd. Indeed, with an outstretched leg and without even glancing at the bottle cap, she managed to cleanly remove it while driving an ATV.

Of course, a handful of creative celebrities decided to put their own unique spin on the challenge. For instance, instead of physical moves, Mariah Carey simply used her famous octave-spanning voice to displace the cap in her tongue-in-cheek video. Her efforts were appreciated by more than four million people within the first three days.

A few days later, Kendall Jenner got in on the action with one of the more action-packed attempts. Indeed, the socialite was riding a jet ski as she kicked the cap clean off the bottle and into the ocean waters. But the star’s daredevil tactic ultimately backfired with some viewers.

Indeed, many chastised Jenner for polluting the ocean with yet more plastic. One particularly annoyed Twitter user commented, “She better dive in and find that bottle cap.” Another remarked, “Kendall Jenner doing the [bottle] cap challenge and throwing other plastic into the ocean… Can this girl get one thing right?!”

But one of the most impressive challenge attempts came from martial arts legend Donnie Yen. Indeed, the Ip Man star upped the ante considerably by blindfolding himself for his unique take on it. And yet despite this obvious hindrance, the popular actor coolly kicked the bottle cap off without even flinching.

Sophie Turner also joined in with the fun, well kinda. The Game of Thrones star uploaded a clip to Instagram in which she tried to use mind control to open a mini wine bottle. However, she then decided enough was enough, declaring, “Stop this. Now,” before opening the bottle in a more conventional way.

Turner, of course, wasn’t the only celeb to opt for the easy route. Indeed, Jon “Bones” Jones initially seemed all set to put his own mixed martial arts spin on the challenge while in the lounge. The star soon abandoned his roundhouse kick, however, and simply used his hands to remove the bottle cap.

Not everyone immediately became a martial artist for the challenge, though, “Can I do the one where you drink it?” comedy actor David Spade quipped after watching John Mayer’s clip. However, he then decided to take it a little more seriously by uploading his own attempt. In fact, the comedian seemed to surprise himself when he made the task look effortless, later tweeting, “Take that Bruce Lee.”

Producer Diplo, however, wasn’t challenged by anyone at all. But that didn’t stop him from filming his own attempt while on an Ibizan beach. The star uploaded his clip to Instagram with the caption, “Since no one requested me to do this (@johnmayer) and also since no one thinks I’m good at anything except pushing buttons on stage… Here is evidence that I also do karate.”

But one of the most unusual challenge attempts came from a robot named Baxter. Created by a research team at MIT’s CSAIL, or Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, the robot doesn’t have any legs. But by mirroring a human bicep’s movement, it was able to use its arm to precisely remove the cap from a bottle.

And perhaps the most adorable attempt came from Donnie Wahlberg’s dog Lumpy. Indeed, the New Kids on the Block star challenged his beloved canine to join in with the fun when he threw an empty water bottle across the room. Lumpy then chased after it before removing the cap with his teeth.

Boxer Conor McGregor then threw down the gauntlet to his nemesis Floyd Mayweather after posting an attempt on Instagram. And in an inspired bit of marketing, the Irishman also managed to advertise his own brand of whiskey while doing so. Indeed, McGregor can be seen grasping a bottle of Proper Whiskey during his challenge, before uncorking it and enjoying a glug in celebration.

Of course, McGregor isn’t the only famous face to have used the challenge as a marketing opportunity. Country singer Blake Shelton also got in on the action with a bottle of his own vodka brand, Smithworks. However, unlike the boxer’s ultra-cool effort, Shelton ended up kicking the entire bottle off its perch.

And then there’s the man who’s no stranger to harnessing the power of the internet to sell products, Ryan Reynolds. Indeed, fast becoming a social media master, the Deadpool star also uploaded his own attempt to help promote his gin brand, Aviation. And just like Shelton, the actor didn’t exactly cover himself in glory.

Reynolds’ clip initially resembles a TV commercial, as a bottle of Aviation Gin can be seen traveling around a city’s streets day and night. It then makes its way to the actor’s trailer, where the Hollywood heartthrob is waiting with a smile. Sadly for the bottle, it then meets a somewhat violent end.

Indeed, we next see Reynolds in his trailer launching into the same kind of roundhouse kick perfected by the likes of Statham and Mayer. However, martial arts does not appear to be the actor’s forte. For the A-lister smashes the entire bottle instantly with his hopelessly wild kick before sheepishly making a swift exit.

As you would expect, Reynolds’ epic fail soon racked up more views than the majority of the more successful attempts. Indeed, at the time of writing, it’s been watched by more than two million people on Twitter and received nearly 140,000 likes. And many viewers couldn’t contain their joy after seeing the clip.

One particularly enthusiastic Twitter user commented, “When an ad is more entertaining than half of what comes out of Hollywood.” Other remarks from entertained fans included, “Hilarious. I thought that was going to happen, but seeing it was so much more fun. Thank you,” and “You are such an adorable dork.”

Other viewers were just grateful that they got to see a slow-motion shot of Reynolds’ derriere during the clip. “Such a nice view,” posted one particularly thirsty user. “As far as I’m concerned, that’s Canada’s ass,” and “You couldn’t do it. But DAMN!! This frame worth it,” were just a few of the other lustful responses.

Of course, Reynolds has form when it comes to promoting his gin online. In fact, just a few weeks before the bottle cap challenge, he went viral with an Amazon review of the drink he’d actually written himself. Unsurprisingly, his critique was a glowing one in which he described Aviation as the smoothest gin he’d ever tried.

And in December 2018, Reynolds uploaded an amusing video in which he revealed the unorthodox process behind the gin’s production. The actor claims that distillers spend four hours meditating before saying sorry to each and every berry they then beat “the living hell out of.” And before each gin crate can be shipped off, it also has to be serenaded by Grammy-winning chanteuse Sarah McLachlan.

Reynolds has also roped in several celebrity friends to help with his viral marketing efforts. In one particular skit, the funnyman and his apparent nemesis, Hugh Jackman, attempt to bury the hatchet with specially made videos promoting each other’s companies. Firstly, Reynolds describes the Aussie’s Laughing Man Coffee as “incredible.” He then shows a highly professional commercial for it which he claims “cost a million dollars.”

However, it’s clear that Jackman hasn’t put in quite as much effort. In fact, in his ad, he simply sits on a sofa where he describes Reynolds as a “complete and total f***ing a**hole,” before deliberately spilling a bottle of Aviation everywhere. “I’m sorry man… I didn’t think the truce was actually real,” states the Aussie actor after the clip airs, suggesting their faux-feud is all set to continue.

In another video, Reynolds ropes in none other than billionaire Richard Branson for a spot of promo. But once again, the actor doesn’t appear to get along too well with his co-star. Indeed, during the clip celebrating a partnership between Aviation and Virgin Atlantic, the pair constantly disagree, with Branson even calling the actor “Brian” by mistake.

Of course, with all this messing around promoting Reynolds’ gin, it’s easy to forget that he does actually have a day job. Shortly before his bottle cap challenge attempt, the star’s voice could be heard in box office hit Detective Pikachu. And later in 2019 Reynolds appeared in front of the camera as the star of vigilante thriller Six Underground.

Reynolds also has several films in the pipeline for 2020. He will first reunite with Samuel L. Jackson in the sequel The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. And then he’ll play a bank employee who finds out that his life is anything but how it seems in the virtual world sci-fi comedy Free Guy.
