A Twitter user posted a screengrab of a message sent to her by an ex-partner ahead of his wedding day – but the content was far from what you might anticipate. Alexsa Sanchez Aguilar hadn’t expected to hear from her old boyfriend in the first place, of course, but she was beyond surprised by what he had to say. And what’s more, the message had gone viral within days – triggering some sharply contrasting reactions on the internet.
Alexsa Sanchez Aguilar glanced at her phone as a message came in. The SMS displaying on the iPhone was a little unusual. It read: “Is this still Alexsa’s number?” Somewhat tentatively, the young woman responded in a way many people would in the same circumstances. “Um, yes…who’s this?” she asked. And the reply left her shocked.
First came a name, followed by the question “remember me?” And Sanchez Aguilar certainly did recognize who it was from. It was a man with whom she’d been in a romantic relationship years earlier. Despite the deep feelings the pair had for each other at the time, though, the relationship had failed to last. They’d parted as a result, and that was that. Or so the young woman believed.
However, it seems that the legacy of their relationship had been incredibly impactful on her ex-partner, who’d now decided to contact Sanchez Aguilar completely out of the blue. His words weren’t those you’d perhaps normally associate with an ex-partner, though. And even more surprising was the incredible revelation about what was due to take place the following day.
After the initial texts establishing that the number still belonged to Sanchez Aguilar, the man then got very quickly to the point. Indeed, the third message left the young mother-of-one stunned. It turned out that his contact was coming at an incredibly important moment in her ex-partner’s life. It was the eve of a life-changing moment for him, in fact.
The timing of the contact was far from accidental. Sanchez Aguilar’s ex had something he wanted to get off his chest in the context of the big event that would greet him the following morning. For it was then, just 24 hours after reaching out to his ex-girlfriend, that he was due to be married to another woman.
The revelation left Sanchez Aguilar stunned. And it was the candidness of the message, along with the timing of the contact, that inspired the mother to share the incident with her friends and followers on social media. The post on Twitter was introduced succinctly with the words: “I’m speechless.”
Sanchez Aguilar, who’s been active on Twitter since early 2014 and has more than 4,000 followers, then included a screengrab of the entire message that she’d received from the mystery ex, who to this day remains unidentified. It was a long message, which she posted in its entirety. And it left readers with no doubts as to the feelings that the man still held for Sanchez Aguilar. Moreover, it was these feelings that subsequently became a hot topic of debate on social media.
“I’m getting married tomorrow. I wanted to send this message,” the candid SMS began. Clearly, the man had been inspired to write by the momentous occasion that was looming over him. Indeed, it was the fact that he was to become betrothed to another woman a day after sending the message that stirred up so much emotion on Twitter and beyond.
The man then proceeded to pour out his gratitude to Sanchez Aguilar. “Thank you for being my first love. Thank you for always encouraging me, thank you for keeping me out of trouble, thank you for the times you took care of me when I was sick and depressed,” the message read.
The gratitude didn’t end there, though, and the ex went on to state that he wanted Sanchez Aguilar to find the happiness that he’d subsequently discovered with his soon-to-be bride. “Thank you for loving me,” he wrote. “If you haven’t already I hope one day you find love. If you loved me that much when we were young I can only imagine how strong and powerful your love is now.”
Next, the ex wanted to inform Sanchez Aguilar of the lessons that she had taught him, as well as to compliment her kindness and sincerity. “The way your heart is made it’s amazing. I know we were only kids when we dated but you taught me what love is,” the message continued.
The man from Sanchez Aguilar’s past then wanted to focus on her happiness. “To the man who is lucky enough to have you as their wife I hope he treats you with care, I hope he knows who he has in front of him, I hope he shows you love and loyalty every day. You deserve that and more,” he stated.
And it was this part of the message that irked so many observers later on – that the ex felt the need to state how lucky any other man would be to have Sanchez Aguilar’s devotion. “He still loves you girl,” wrote one Twitter user, in a sentiment that was shared by others. As a result, concern was expressed for the fiancée that that man had at the time of the message.
Next, the ex-partner wanted to restate the reason for his uninitiated contact on the eve of such a momentous day in his life. “My point in all of this is, you are the reason why I know how to love someone,” he wrote, seemingly full of gratitude for the way in which he and Sanchez Aguilar had bonded during the relationship that now was no more.
“You taught me love, you taught me how to deal with my anger and how to live life to the fullest and I’m grateful for you. I wish you love and happiness,” the message concluded. And the nature of the text, particularly the timing of its arrival, left Sanchez Aguilar stunned.
Moreover, after the young woman shared the message on Twitter, it would soon go viral. Within days it was retweeted almost 100,000 times, in fact, and had soon received hundreds of thousands of likes. So, what was Sanchez Aguilar’s initial response to the message? “At first, I didn’t know what to say. I started crying when I read the text. It warmed my heart that I helped him be a better version of himself,” she told BuzzFeed in July 2019.
Given the social media furore that the tweet stirred up, followers were unsurprisingly desperate to find out how Sanchez Aguilar had responded to her grateful ex. Indeed, had she responded at all? Well, it wasn’t long before the recipient of the initial message duly obliged with a full reveal of her reply, which was equally effusive in its praise for the ex-partner.
Sanchez Aguilar introduced a screengrab of her reply to her ex with a clear response to the requests that she’d received since posting the initial message. “For everyone asking me what I replied to, this is what I replied. I was literally speechless and didn’t know what to say but that’s what I said,” read the introduction.
“Dude I’m crying. First of [all], congratulations on all the beautiful blessings that are coming your way. Thank you for being there for me when I needed you. Thank you for your kind words. I am so unbelievably proud of you, you did everything you put your mind into and killed that s***,” the reply began.
“I’m happy you found the woman you want forever with. I’m happy you’re happy. You’re an amazing father to your daughter. Your fiancée is such a beautiful soul, and you have such a beautiful daughter. Again, congratulations on your marriage. I wish you and your beautiful family nothing but blessings,” Sanchez Aguilar concluded.
Sanchez Aguilar had made a direct reference to the man’s fiancée in her text. Indeed, her ex’s new partner became the unwitting focus of much of the online chatter when the message exchange was revealed. What would she think of this candid sharing of feelings between the two ex-lovers? Well, the fiancée’s reaction was to be one of the most surprising turn of events.
Going back to the original message expressing the ex-partner’s innermost feelings, the SMS had actually begun. “I’m getting married tomorrow. I wanted to send this message. (My fiancée knows I’m sending this to you). Thank you for being my first love.” So, his current partner knew about the message all along.
The revelation that the fiancée was fully in the loop didn’t seem to appease some Twitter users, however, many of whom were outraged. Some even questioned why the bride to be would want to tie the knot with a man who was so keen to contact his ex on the eve of his wedding. “What kind of wife would even be comfortable with this, that [would] be a whole cancelation right there,” read one such tweet.
And the less-then-impressed messages didn’t end there. “If I was the new girl I’d be a little weirded out that you wanted to send a paragraph to your ex-girlfriend and express your feelings. In my opinion, that’s weird,” commented one observer. “I’m sorry I’m not built like this, but this is so unnecessary,” read another.
Indeed, it became apparent that there were many who saw the ex-partner’s original message as wholly inappropriate in the circumstances. Plenty suggested that his soon-to-be-wife should have been the focus of his flattery and gratitude on the eve of his wedding instead. Some believed that Sanchez Aguilar shouldn’t have been impressed with the situation, either.
“I would die if I molded a man to be the perfect husband for another woman,” read one such tweet, and it was far from the only one to express that line of thinking. “So, basically thanking you for molding him to be the perfect husband to someone that’s not you? Feels unnecessary,” another Twitter user commented.
“Weird” was a word that commonly came up during such criticism as well. “You’re getting married and you’re thinking in depth about how amazing your first love is and how much she loved you and influenced your personal growth as well as how amazing she must be currently? I’m a Negative Nancy but it’s a little weird,” wrote a Twitter user with the handle SunflowerMamí.
But Sanchez Aguilar herself didn’t see it this way and quickly leaped to her ex’s defense. “To the people saying they would cancel the wedding if their ex did what my ex did. In my opinion, I don’t see why you should… he never flirted with me, he simply thanked me for helping him be a better version of himself, and he wished me love and happiness,” she retorted.
The mum, who often posts on Twitter in Spanish, had something in particular to say to those people who felt her ex had used her. “It’s not about me ‘building someone for somebody else.’ I helped him get out of a rough path, I was obviously meant to be a part of his life but that doesn’t mean I was meant to be his wife not [sic] does it mean that he will cheat on his wife,” she explained. “People fall out of love, it’s life.”
Sanchez Aguilar’s passionate defense of her ex didn’t end there, either. “It’s not him rubbing it in my face that he found someone, it’s him thanking me for showing him how to love and appreciating what him and I went through together. It’s not to say that his wife didn’t show him all of that, she obviously did!” Sanchez Aguilar added in another social media post.
“It’s not that he wasn’t a great man when we dated because he was/is a great man! We just didn’t work out [and] that’s fine! Relationships don’t always end with hating the person. It just simply doesn’t work out!” Sanchez Aguilar concluded, clearly angered by some of the negativity surrounding the contact.
There were also many messages of support, however. “I don’t think it’s disrespectful at all. It’s a beautiful thing to have gratitude for people you once loved. Relationships end but love doesn’t have to and expressing the impact she had on him doesn’t diminish the love he shares with his fiancée,” a Twitter user responded to another accusation that the original message from the ex was disrespectful.
Indeed, despite the criticism, there were many others who saw love and affection in the exchange. And there was plenty of positivity in the responses as well. “This has to be the most beautiful thing I’ve read. Shout out to both of y’all for being such damn good people,” wrote one such supporter.
Sanchez Aguilar later stated in an interview with BuzzFeed that her motivation for putting the post out on social media was well-meaning. “[I] wanted to show that just because things don’t work out with someone, that doesn’t mean you should have hate towards them. Regardless of everything, you were meant to be a part of that person’s life, and them, yours.” For those who believe in fate, they are powerful words.
Moreover, the story didn’t end there, as there was one further twist in the tale. Curious Twitter users were keen to know what happened next, and one brave individual broached the subject directly. “All this is missing is a wedding invitation,” the user in question stated. “I actually did get invited,’ Sanchez Aguilar quickly responded.
And a couple of days later, there was another Twitter update from Sanchez Aguilar in response to a question asking about the feelings of her ex’s fiancée about the situation. The tweet that provoked Sanchez Aguilar’s reply was indicative of the concern that had been shown for the man’s current partner since the revealing message went vital.
“Anyone wanna know who the fiancée is? I’m just curious how this will affect her special day…aka the wedding. I need clarity that his wife-to-be is really down with him texting this message to an old ex,” Kathy Freeland wrote on Twitter. Sanchez Aguilar clearly felt compelled to address this concern.
“I know who she is. She is completely okay. They had an amazing wedding and are now enjoying their honeymoon vacation. There’s this thing called, trust. They have that,” Sanchez Agular posted. From the response, it isn’t entirely clear whether she attended her ex’s wedding or not, which further fueled the curiosity of online observers.
And among the many profound comments that were offered in reply, one in particular stood out. “I think this is beautiful. He doesn’t have to be in love with her to allow himself to still be vulnerable and express himself. They probably had some loose ends and this was some final closure. Of course, he still loves his first love, he always will,” read Chloe-Jeanne’s poignant tweet. Love really did appear to be the winner in this case.
