Picture spending months organizing your perfect wedding day, only to arrive at the venue to find that the groom is missing. The level of heartbreak and embarrassment is hard to imagine, of course. But one woman from California says she knows exactly what it feels like.
Yes, just a few years ago, Dee Diamond was engaged to be married to a man called Danny. The couple had in fact only been together for a few months when they decided to get hitched. Then, about a year into their relationship, they were all set for the upcoming wedding.
Indeed, the venue was booked, the food and drinks were ordered and the DJ was confirmed. The bride-to-be had even found the perfect dress, and the wedding cake was having the final bits of icing applied.
And Dee said that on the morning of the wedding she got a phone call from her fiancé, who said, “I love you.” The next time the couple would see each other, Dee thought, would be at the altar. There were, after all, just a few hours to go until they tied the knot.
Dee spent what she apparently thought would be her last morning of unmarried life at her parents’ house – and then it was time to head to the venue. The room was already filled with wedding guests, who were waiting to watch Dee and Danny get hitched. But Dee was still with her bridesmaids hidden from view.
Her mom’s best friend then vanished for a few minutes before returning to tell Dee some heart-stopping news. The bride said she could naturally tell that something was up – but she never expected to hear that her husband-to-be was nowhere to be found.
The friend not only told Dee that Danny hadn’t arrived, but also that his groomsmen weren’t there. And on closer inspection of the guests, it became clear that none of Danny’s family and friends had turned up for the wedding, either.
Speaking on Dr. Phil in April 2011, Dee said she had been shocked, panicked and scared when it dawned on her what had happened. Dee simply couldn’t understand how the same guy who had called her that morning had gone and stood her up.
After all, the couple had invited a total of 200 people to share their special day, and they’d spent a huge amount of money on the wedding in advance. In fact, Dr. Phil estimated that more than $31,000 had been spent on the wedding that never happened.
But it wasn’t just about the money. No, Dee said she felt completely betrayed by the man she was supposed to spend the rest of her life with. And to make matters worse, it seemed as though it might have been a premeditated decision to stand up his fiancé at the altar.
Dee figured that because none of Danny’s guests were there, he must have called them telling them not to come. Yet, according to Dee, he never told his fiancée that the wedding was off. Instead, she faced the embarrassment of being a jilted bride.
Two years after the incident, however, the couple were invited onto Dr. Phil to discuss what exactly had gone on that day. Interestingly, Danny offered a completely different side to the story: one in which he was innocent of any wrongdoing.
Yes, Danny claimed that Dee knew that the wedding wasn’t happening, but she turned up anyway to get sympathy from other people. “I called it off the night before,” claimed Danny. He also added that they had had an argument, which wasn’t unusual for them.
Dee’s ex-fiancé further explained to Dr. Phil how in the first three months of their relationship, things were great, and he could have imagined spending his whole life with Dee. But after months of “abuse” from her, he decided to end it before they tied the knot.
Dee admitted that she was somebody “who wanted to be married very badly,” which Dr. Phil suggested might have contributed to the breakdown of their relationship. When asked if he felt “railroaded” into marriage, Danny replied saying, “Yes, I was. Definitely.”
The jilted bride went on to tell Dr. Phil that she “felt a lot of pressure” during the relationship. “Oh, I’m in my mid-30s. I need to be married,” she recalled thinking to herself. But unfortunately, Danny turned out not to be “the one.”
The former couple have found themselves in an acrimonious financial battle ever since the failed wedding. When Dee was asked what she wanted from her ex, she bluntly said, “Money!” She hopes that plenty of it is coming her way to compensate for what happened to her.
In fact, Dee and her father have sued the runaway groom for more than $50,000, but they haven’t seen any of the money quite yet. “If he ever gets another job, he’s going to have a brick put on his paycheck. He’s going to be living under a bridge,” Dee’s father threatened.
“I also have punitive damages, so he can’t even get out of it with bankruptcy. The punitive damages are for malice,” the protective father continued. However, Danny still maintains that he didn’t do anything wrong by ending the relationship at the last minute.
The outcome of the financial dispute remains to be seen. But one thing seems clear: Dee and Danny’s relationship was destined for failure. So even if Dee was jilted at the altar unexpectedly, it’s safe to say that both of them have had a lucky escape.
