In 2016 A Set Of Identical Twins From The U.S. Appeared On Ambush Makeover

Imagine arriving at the airport to meet your sister, only to find that she is wearing exactly the same outfit as you. Usually, that’s a highly unlikely scenario; for one pair of U.S. twins, though, it really happened. On the twins’ 52nd birthday, however, they decided to try to do something dramatic to change their respective appearances.

And that something was aiming to attract the attention of the producers of Ambush Makeover. But only a handful of very lucky people have actually had the chance to appear on the Today show segment, which, as its name suggests, transforms the looks of those sorely in need of style revamps.

As it turned out, though, two of those lucky people were twins Candy LaPlante and Pennie Mutschler. And while not all twins look alike, these two particular women – both brunettes with similar features – really did. But the resemblances between the pair didn’t end there.

For instance, although LaPlante lived in Sebastian, Florida, and Mutschler resided in Houston, Texas, those geographical differences hadn’t stopped them from pursuing very similar career paths. LaPlante was an accountant; Mutschler, meanwhile, had her own tax firm.

So the sisters worked in the same industry and pretty much looked the same, too. But what about their style? Well, spookily enough, the twins often found that they were on the same wavelength when it came to outfit choices to boot.

Sometimes they would even accidentally wear the same clothes without having discussed it beforehand. One time, for instance, they had met at the airport while both wearing the exact same type of shirt. It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that the sisters would tell the presenters of Ambush Makeover that they do “everything the same.”

In addition, they even finished each other’s sentences during the pre-makeover interview, demonstrating just how in sync they really were. In the video of that moment, the twins are seen sporting the same layered hairstyle and bright yellow top – two things that had caught the producers’ attention.

The pair had come down to the plaza outside the Today television studios clutching a sign that read, “It’s the twins’ birthday NYC” in a bid to get selected to appear on the show. That placard, combined with their matching outfits and hairdos, won them a spot on Ambush Makeover.

Then, when asked by the presenter if they were looking forward to getting a makeover, the answer was, “Very ready – it’s gonna be good.” And before they knew it, it was time to put all their trust in the show’s hair, makeup and stylist teams and embark on their transformations.

First to be revealed was LaPlante’s makeover. “Come on out, let us see the new you!” cried the presenter, and the first twin tentatively stepped out onto the stage to reveal her new look. She walked out in a pretty floral dress, complemented by a brand-new hairstyle.

While LaPlante hadn’t had much of her hair cut off, it had been highlighted with blonde streaks and blow-dried away from her face, making the ’do bouncy and youthful-looking as a result. She’d also been given a full face of makeup and high-heeled shoes to wear to complete her elegant ensemble.

Then when LaPlante was told to turn around so that she could see herself in the mirror, she did so and let out an exclamation of, “Oh my gosh,” clearly amazed by what she saw looking back at her. And, after that reveal, it was time for her twin sister to come out and show off her new style.

Before Mutschler was allowed to join her on stage, however, LaPlante was told to stand facing the wall so as not to ruin the surprise. Then Mutschler strutted out onto the stage in a stylish black top and jeans, with a totally different hairstyle to her sister’s.

Mutschler’s hair had been cut shorter than LaPlante’s and dyed even lighter; her bangs had disappeared, too, along with her glasses. And after a few seconds, the first twin was allowed to turn around to see her sister’s look, and neither of them could believe what they saw.

“You look good!” Mutschler said to LaPlante as they both tried to take it all in. Then the presenters briefly talked through how Mutschler’s look was achieved before giving the pair one last surprise. The hosts reached behind their chairs and pulled out two bags.

There was one bag for each twin, containing a “personalized formula” to help maintain their new hair color at home. With that, the segment concluded. After that episode of Ambush Makeover was uploaded to YouTube, however, even more people got to appreciate the sisters’ new selves.

Indeed, the video has been watched more than a million times since it was uploaded. And, understandably, it has sparked quite a reaction online. There were plenty of comments praising both the twins and the show’s stylists for doing such a good job, for instance. “Both women looked phenomenal! Love the differences and individuality!” one person said.

But not all the comments were particularly positive, and people couldn’t help but compare the two women. “The last twin had it so much better. Her hair is nicer and her dress is so much more chic. I feel sorry for the first twin,” someone else commented on the video.

There was also some criticism about the stylists’ decision to remove the twins’ glasses. One frustrated viewer wrote, “Once again, why do you remove the glasses? It sends a message that the look is better without them. Please, leave the glasses on… one does not need to remove glasses in order to complete a makeover.”

And, unfortunately, some of the comments on the video were brutal. All that really matters, though, is that both of the two women appeared to be delighted with their new looks. Indeed, it’s how they feel in their own skin that’s really important – not what internet commenters think.
