Marie Buchan lives in Selly Oak in Birmingham, U.K., around three-and-a-half hours northwest of London. In 2017, the former lap dancer was living on welfare to help pay for the care of her eight kids. However, although she was studying and had applied for jobs, she didn’t expect to gain employment for one astonishing reason.

Buchan, who was 37 at the time, was claiming what are called tax credits from the U.K. government to help with the costs of raising her eight children. Tax credits were available to anyone, whether they were gainfully employed or not, although the amount a claimant received was dependent on their circumstances. Buchan was receiving £31,000 annually, which is about $40,000.

Indeed, Buchan said the welfare money was spent on her children, including buying them a horse. Furthermore, she had a job to earn a little extra cash. Although she had once worked as a lap dancer, she got a job as a care worker to plug a £6,000, or $7,700, cut in her welfare. However, that money was spent on cosmetic surgery.

Buchan, at least, was trying to turn her life around. She was studying for a diploma and was actively seeking employment. Moreover, the ambitious mom had aspirations of putting an end to sexism in her desired industry. Indeed, she wanted to work as a mechanic. However, she was struggling to land a job for a shocking reason.

Attempts at securing a job were unsuccessful because, Buchan claimed, she was too beautiful. She told the Daily Star newspaper in January 2017, “A couple of garages approached me after seeing me on TV, but as you talk to them more and more, you see what they’re after. They’re not really after me working there, they’re looking for something more. I think they’re just dirty big perverts.”
