There are few better ways to start or end a tough or stressful day than to hop into a warm, bubbly bath. Obviously, it’s an ideal way for many of us to relax and unwind, but there are other benefits, too. These encompass positive effects on both the mind and the body. Here, we take a look at just a few.
1. Maintain immune health
It’s been argued that time in the bath can actually help you to battle infections. The theory goes that the warm water contributes towards raising the overall temperature of your body. As a consequence, your immune system will then be in a better position to overcome whatever it is that ails you.
2. A better night’s sleep
According to the National Sleep Foundation, a tranquil, easygoing habit before bed actually makes for a better night’s slumber. And what could possibly be considered a more serene experience than a nice bath? If you keep the lights dimmed, you might just lure yourself into a perfect state of relaxation before bed.
3. Regulate blood pressure
Believe it or not, baths are supposedly good for blood pressure and ultimately maintaining the strength of your heart. Apparently, even 20 minutes spent partially submerged underwater can enhance the flow of blood around the body. In fact, there’s even a ritual from Japan involving baths which is known to help ease high blood pressure.
4. Improve mental health
Perhaps the most intangible – but nonetheless significant– benefit of a bath is the effect it can have on your state of mind. In fact, there’s even research suggesting that it can alleviate mental exhaustion. So all in all, taking a soak is a pretty positive way to spend your time. Indeed, as the famed poet and author Sylvia Plath put it in her novel The Bell Jar, “There must be quite a few things a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them.”
