As far as Julija Kolpakowa and Daniel Drzewiecki were concerned, their dog Charlie was part of the family. So when they welcomed their daughter, they were keen for the beagle to be involved. However, when they filmed their pet, the footage revealed what he really thought of their daughter.
Kolpakowa and Drzewiecki are originally from Lithuania, but have lived in Ennis, Ireland, for some time. And although the couple are clearly settled in their adopted country, being away from so many friends and family must be hard.
Luckily though, Kolpakowa and Drzewiecki have a family member and best friend all wrapped up in one furry body. The couple are the proud owners of lovely beagle named Charlie, who will do almost anything for his favorite humans.
The couple adopted Charlie from a farm in Wicklow, Ireland, in 2015. And since then the responsible owners have trained him to complete a range of household tasks. Some of them come in handy, such as the beagle’s ability to close cabinet doors. However, others are just for Kolpakowa and Drzewiecki’s amusement, such as fetching them the TV control or even a can of beer.
Needless to say then, Charlie and his humans relied on each other a lot. So when Kolpakowa and Drzewiecki discovered that they would welcome their first child in 2016, they must have wondered how their family dynamic was about change.
Drzewiecki in particular wanted to ensure that Charlie adjusted well to having a new sibling around. So he decided that he would train the dog to help look after the baby. That way, he wouldn’t feel left out. “I didn’t want Charlie to feel jealous of the baby,” Drzewiecki told TODAY.com in 2014.
Consequently, when the couple’s daughter, Laura, arrived, the proud dad wasted no time in introducing her to Charlie. And by the time the baby was a few months old, the beagle was helping out with almost all parental tasks, including changing her diapers and fetching her blanket.
Soon enough, it was clear that Charlie was shaping up to be a pretty much perfect nanny dog. However, Kolpakowa and Drzewiecki were yet to leave Laura alone with the canine. As a result, they had no idea whether Charlie was helping out because he wanted to please them or because he genuinely felt affection towards their child.
So the couple decided to test their dog’s dedication to their darling baby. To do so, they took a step back from their parenting duties and left Charlie to his own devices, all the while filming exactly how the beagle rose to the challenge.
In the resulting footage, Charlie is a model student of everything his dad has taught him. He can be seen playing the keyboard to entertain Laura, pressing the button when her pram reaches some traffic lights and even rocking the baby to sleep in her crib.
From the video, it’s clear to see that Charlie has learned a lot so that he can look after Laura. However, according to Kolpakowa and Drzewiecki, there was one thing they never had to teach their dog – how to love their daughter. That, they say, came naturally.
Speaking of her daughter’s bond with Charlie, Kolpakova told Evoke.ie, “She smiles when she sees Charlie. We don’t know what she’s thinking, but we know she likes him. From the beginning, he was beside her all the time. Everyone could still play with her, but he would protect her.”
Naturally, Charlie and Laura’s friendship proved popular online. Consequently, Drzewiecki decided to use YouTube and other social media platforms to keep their fans updated with their adorable antics. And, as of 2018, their channel had clocked up more than 86 million views.
In one video that gained viral fame, little Laura can be seen sitting in her bouncer as one of her parents keeps her happy with a colorful toy. However, it seems that the item has also caught Charlie’s eye, as he comes over and snatches it away from the baby.
Understandably, the then five-month-old isn’t amused in the slightest. As Charlie slinks off to his bed with the toy in his mouth, Laura erupts into tears. Realizing his error in judgement, the dog then attempts to appease the infant by bringing her toy after toy in a bid to make her smile again.
Since going live in 2014, that video alone has amassed more than 24 million views. Furthermore, the footage has also attracted close to 2,000 comments, many of them from gushing viewers. “This is the most responsible, adorable, sweetest most caring beagle I’ve ever seen,” one person wrote. “He just made my crappy day brighter.”
While Charlie enjoyed his moment in the spotlight, his owners could not have been prouder. “Charlie showed us how babies and dogs can be the best of friends,” reads a segment on the family’s YouTube channel. “He demonstrates that he is an important part of our family and the unconditional love and and joy he provides is immeasurable.”
As the years passed and Laura grew older, Charlie remained by his best friend’s side. Eventually, the pair were doing everything together – from sleeping and eating to playing and napping. And their family wouldn’t have had things any other way.
As Charlie and Laura’s relationship developed, the attention they received online seemed to increase. And according to one fan, we could all learn something from the twosome’s friendship. “They always treat each other special they don’t take each other for granted,” they wrote on YouTube.
The viewer added, “It’s so easy for adults to not realize how special their spouse or pet is until they are gone. So everyone should take notice of this sweet relationship then be inspired to go hug their pet or someone they love. That’s why people can’t get enough of Charlie and Laura… It’s that sweet unconditional love they have for each other.”
