The first dance is often one of the highlights of a wedding. Along with cutting the cake and the moment the bride tosses the bouquet, it is a poignant celebration of the newlyweds’ love. And Polish couple Patrycja and Mateusz Kolator clearly wanted to make a splash with their first dance, as they cracked out a stunning routine that had their guests cheering.
Patrycja and Mateusz’ memorable wedding dance was shared on YouTube after they tied the knot in 2016. And their incredible performance stunned online viewers worldwide. Indeed, to date, the clip has racked up more than four million views and over 16,000 likes.
The couple’s dazzling routine is far from the typical first dance, with the pair adding a thoroughly modern twist to a well-known custom. And though it is unclear exactly when the practice began, it has been conducted for hundreds of years in some form or another. And interestingly, it did not begin at weddings. A guest of honor would perform the first dance as a way of kicking off the grand opening of a ball.
However, over the years the special dance at balls evolved and became a part of weddings, and it is now a cherished part of a couple’s big day. And while the style may vary considerably, brides and grooms from many different cultures perform some sort of ceremonial dance when they are exchanging vows.
In the U.S and U.K the dance often takes place in the evening, after the ceremony, the meal and toasts. The guests gather around to watch as the new husband and wife take centre stage and celebrate their love for each other with a slow, romantic dance. And after a few twirls around the floor, other people usually start joining in.
Meanwhile, recent years have seen some changes to the traditional first dance, with a wider variety of dance styles becoming increasingly popular. Instead of just swaying on the dancefloor, many engaged couples are taking ballroom lessons to make sure they do their first dance justice. Some are even learning complicated choreographed routines to perform on their big day.
Doing something a little unusual often captures people’s imagination. For example, in 2007 couple Julia Boggio and James Derbyshire became internet sensations with their original take on the first dance. The pair dazzled their guests in London, England, when they performed a routine from the 1987 film Dirty Dancing at their nuptials in 2005.
Julia and James performed the sequence from the end of the much-loved movie, which sees Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey defy everyone to dance on stage in front of the latter’s disapproving dad – complete with a tricky lift. Their take, dancing to the hit “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” caused a huge stir and has been watched over ten million times on YouTube.
Julia later told the Daily Mirror newspaper in 2017 that although the dance was not perfect, it definitely “had a lot of heart.” She said, “All of our guests went crazy, cheering. They loved it and it made them all so ready for a good dance after we’d finished. At the time no one was doing choreographed first dances, so it was really a novel thing.”
The video even earned the couple a slot on The Oprah Winfrey Show in America. There, they performed the routine again for the audience and had the surprise of their lives when Dirty Dancing star Patrick Swayze joined them on stage. And since then, countless other couples have recreated the dance for their own nuptials, often uploading them later online.
And now Polish couple Patrycja and Mateusz Kolator looked set to get hearts racing with their own eye-catching routine. And when it came to picking something for their big day, they evidently wanted something original that they could put their own slant on. Indeed, they settled on Meghan Trainor’s 2015 hit “Dear Future Husband.”
Fun, and rather fitting for a wedding, Meghan’s upbeat track is from the perspective of a bride-to-be. She gives the man she is going to marry a few pointers, singing, “Dear future husband. Here’s a few things you’ll need to know if you wanna be my one and only.”
The singer’s tips include not forgetting the flowers when it comes to anniversaries, taking your wife out on dates and knowing how to treat her like a lady. It also advises that the husband should make sure he tells his wife that she is beautiful “each and every night.”
Meghan warns the husband that although he may be working a nine-to-five job, his bride may do so too, so he should not expect her to dish up culinary treats every day. She sings, “… Don’t be thinking I’ll be home and baking apple pies, I never learned to cook, but I can write a hook.”
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the current climate – as the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements propel women’s rights to the top of the agenda – the powerful track has featured in many couples’ first dances, some of whom have shared their videos online.
Couples have also interpreted the song in different ways, with the surprise element apparently a real favorite. One example posted on YouTube shows a woman pushing her stunned-looking groom into a chair. As he watches in amazement, clapping his hand to his cheek, his bride proceeds to dance around him as the song plays. But he quickly gets into the spirit of things, nodding and smiling along.
Meanwhile, the first dance is not always reserved for the bride. as some couples get their wedding parties in on the action. Indeed, several YouTube clips show bridesmaids displaying some moves of their own to Meghan’s hit. And at one ceremony, the song even plays as the bridesmaids and ushers walk down the aisle.
The hilarious footage shows several bridesmaids dressed in bright blue walking down the aisle with different groomsmen. Each pair tells a little story with a mini-sketch and their own combination of steps, with the first duo performing a dramatic twirl on their way to the front, as the guests chuckle.
And the laughs really get going when a lady from the second group dances backwards into the venue, then starts to playfully hit her usher with the bouquet she is carrying. Two more bridesmaids then appear and start walking together, before they realize they have forgotten their groomsman and rush back to escort him.
Meanwhile, a different ambitious bride gave her first dance a pop concert feel when she picked a stage as the perfect spot to show off her moves – complete with a couple of bridesmaids as backing dancers. Indeed, the 2015 YouTube clip shows the groom perched on a chair while she mimes the lyrics and boogies around him.
However, couple Patrycja and Mateusz Kolator from Poland came up with their own unique performance. Indeed, their dance involved mastering some tricky choreography and probably plenty of rehearsals. And the results – a complicated swing routine – took the internet by storm.
Both the bride and groom look as if they are battling a few butterflies as they prepare to strut their stuff. Standing on an empty dancefloor surrounded by a crowd of friends and family members, they shoot each other apprehensive glances as the disc jockey speaks in Polish to the guests and introduces their dance.
But one thing Patrycja and Mateusz definitely don’t have to worry about is their outfits. The pair look utterly adorable in eye-catching red and white dance clothes. Mateusz wears black trousers with a long sleeved white top, red shoes and snazzy red braces, and Patrycja looks stunning in a short red skirt, and her dark hair in an elegant up do.
And when the jaunty tune starts to play, the guests look on expectantly. Mateusz and Patrycja then launch into their routine – and it does not disappoint. The bride then strides confidently over to Mateusz. He, meanwhile, pretends he hasn’t noticed her and stands clutching a flower and periodically checking his watch.
When Patrycja gets to him she leaps up to plant a kiss on his cheek. He then tosses the flower into the crowd and the pair begin to dance side by side, moving forwards while rocking an impressive series of high kicks. Then, to cheers from the crowd, they loosen up and get into the real swing section of the piece.
To excited cheers from guests, the groom lifts his new wife in his arms and dips her backwards in a theatrical fashion, as she wiggles her feet in the air. Never pausing to catch their breath, they then travel across the floor in a series of intricate steps that would not look out of a place on a performance in Dancing With The Stars.
The guests squeal with excitement as Mateusz lifts Patrycja into the air once again and then carefully lowers her backwards as she stretches out until her hands nearly touch the ground. He athletically twirls her around his body before she leaps down to the floor and spins away.
Mateusz and Patrycja reunite in the centre of the dancefloor and seamlessly move into a mirror sequence, where they simultaneously perform a set of steps. Somehow they manage an even more complicated lift, in which the groom lifts the bride right onto his shoulders. And once she is settled there, she pumps her hand towards the ceiling, much to the delight of the guests.
As they spin around with Patrycja on Mateusz’ shoulders, Meghan Trainor’s song continues, “After every fight, just apologize, and maybe then I’ll let you try and rock my body right.” The song goes on, “Even if I was wrong. You know I’m never wrong, why disagree?”
Mateusz keeps twirling around at a dizzying pace while lowering Patrycja down his body. He then grabs one of her feet, before moving into another impressive spin as she comes close to doing the splits. Showing off their impeccable timing, they throw in some more fancy footwork for good measure.
Patrycja displays some serious strength of her own when she keeps her body poker straight as Mateusz holds her across his front. Once she is back on two feet, she adds an acrobatic element by throwing in an admirable cartwheel before her man hoists her up in another gravity-defying lift.
Meanwhile, Mateusz’ brace keeps falling down, but it doesn’t deter him. Looking like a true professional, he keeps going, undeterred by his little wardrobe malfunction. Thinking on his feet, he sneakily slips the strap back up at a point where he can incorporate it in a move and not draw anyone’s attention to it.
As the finale approaches Patrycja and Mateusz look as if any nerves have totally vanished and, as opposed to getting tired, there seems to be even more bounce in their steps. With the last notes playing, Mateusz rather gamely throws himself onto the floor on his front, and lies there at Patrycja’s feet. Smiling, she props one foot on his back, as Meghan Trainor sings the words, “Future husband, love me right.”
Laughing and looking thrilled to have pulled off such energetic and complex choreography, Patrycja stands back as Mateusz hops up from the floor. The pair look slightly out of breath, but elated, as they bow for their delighted guests.
The performance clearly impressed those who had been invited to celebrate with the happy couple on their wedding day. But it has also had a big impact on the public since the video made its way online. As mentioned previously, the incredible performance has been viewed on YouTube more than four million times.
More than 350 people have left comments on YouTube about the unusual first dance, praising Mateusz and Patrycja for their delivery of the original routine. One person wrote a sweet message saying that they could see from watching just how much the pair “love dancing.”
Meanwhile, another user clearly saw the love between Patrycja and Mateusz, posting, “That was awesome, [I] hope the magic lasts forever.” And the accolades continued, with one poster writing, “This was a great idea for your first dance. I wish you the best of luck.”
There were also those who remembered the meaning of the first dance and the way it signifies the couple’s love and bond and their hopes for the future. “I wish you all the best [in your new life] life,” said one user, addressing it to Patrycja and Mateusz.
And it looks as if Mateusz and Patrycja’s performance may have had a long-lasting impact. That’s because they are already inspiring others when it comes their own weddings. One user wrote on YouTube that the couple’s fun take on the wedding dance was “[really] cool” and joked, “I’ll admit that I stole some ideas.”
Meanwhile, the number of views and likes on the YouTube video is likely to climb further as more and more people discover the joyful clip. And one thing is for sure, Patrycja and Mateusz have certainly created a wonderful piece of history to look back on in future years.
