With the help of her boyfriend, Nazmayde Castillo found a stunning $50 prom dress online. However, while the gown itself was hardly a one-off, the teen decided to make the outfit her own – and what she managed to come up with is truly stunning.
MJ Johnson comes from Birmingham, Alabama, and is quite the Instagram sensation. He boasts an impressive 16,400 followers on the social media site, in fact – some of whom undoubtedly appreciate his creative reinterpretations of his favorite celebrity fashion moments.
That’s right: Johnson has emulated the outfits of stars such as Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Beyoncé, using his artistic talents to recreate some of their most iconic looks with materials as basic as aluminum foil. Then, when he’s done, he posts snaps of the resulting transformations to Instagram and receives a lot of likes in return.
With that in mind, Johnson’s girlfriend Nazmayde Castillo turned to him for some style advice when looking for a gown for her high school prom. And ever the dutiful boyfriend, Johnson went searching the web to find his lovely lady her perfect dress.
Then Johnson stumbled across an outfit that would make Castillo look a million dollars. And, better still, it didn’t cost the earth. The dress in question was from Californian clothing brand Fashion Nova and was on sale for just $50.
Fashion Nova launched back in 2014 and has since become a hit among the Instagram generation. The brand has some influential fans to boot, with celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Cardi B and Amber Rose all having worn items from Fashion Nova in the past. Rose has even designed her own line for the label.
And the gown that Johnson had spotted featured a beautiful metallic blue pattern, which helped emphasize the wearer’s curves. However, while the dress was undeniably eye-catching, its shortness and form-fitting style may have made it a bit too risqué for the occasion.
In fact, the thigh-exposing number was probably better suited to a nightclub than a high-school prom. However, Johnson and Castillo had a plan up their sleeves. They would transform the dress from sassy to classy – with the help of a little addition.
Specifically, Castillo decided that her Fashion Nova dress would now have a full skirt of handmade fabric roses that would cascade all the way to the floor. That way, the gown would be worthy of any red carpet. Even better, the hue of the flowers would match Johnson’s cobalt blue suit, too.
So, to achieve her desired look, Castillo enlisted the help of her aunt, who presumably got to work on her sewing machine to ensure that the dress was finished in time for prom. “The skirt took, like, two days because she had to buy more flowers,” Johnson told Teen Vogue in May 2018.
Then, once the blooms had been added, the couple “added a little touch of blue glitter” to ensure that Castillo really dazzled at her prom. After that, all that was left to do was for Johnson and his date to get ready and head to the party.
In celebration of their prom, the couple also posed for some photographs, which Johnson would later post on Instagram. And in the snaps, Castillo’s stunning gown perfectly matches her man’s blue suit. However, it’s her striking look that stole the show.
Furthermore, the first photo that Johnson shared of himself and Castillo at their prom went on to garner close to 10,000 likes on Instagram. The image also attracted a number of comments, some of which praised the couple for scrubbing up so well.
However, several of the reactions centered around Castillo and her beautiful gown. “She looks so pretty,” one person wrote. “I love that freaking dress.” Meanwhile, another person pointed out, “There’s no need to buy an expensive dress. I love your creativity.”
Castillo’s unique prom dress proved to be such a hit, in fact, that people demanded to know where it came from. As a result, Johnson later spilled the beans on his Instagram account and revealed that the show-stopping gown was partially handmade.
Writing to his thousands of followers in May 2018, Johnson said, “Since people [are] inboxing me asking where she get her dress from, I found it on Fashion Nova for her and she had the idea to add flowers at the bottom.” He added, “We both creative as hell.”
And Johnson’s post revealing the origin of Castillo’s dress was one of his most popular uploads to date, clocking up in excess of 48,000 likes. What’s more, the couple received a lot of praise for their ingenuity all over again in the comments section.
Complimenting the couple on their creativity, one fan wrote, for example, “I wouldn’t even look at the dress on the left because it would be too short for me. But the way you designed the dress on the right, I would buy it in a heartbeat.”
Another person was impressed by the way in which Johnson and Castillo had taken a relatively cheap dress and turned it into an item that looked as if it could have come from a designer boutique – and without breaking the bank, either. “You can wear a dress for $50 [and] make it look like a $500 dress,” they wrote. “You have to be open minded and creative. Great job.”
So, given the reaction that Johnson and Castillo’s design received, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the couple may now desire futures in fashion. However, for Johnson at least, turning heads is just a hobby. “My dream is to be an actor and social media comedian,” he told Teen Vogue. “I’ve never really thought about being a fashion designer.”
