Becoming a father is a life-changing event. So, after one dad-to-be got more than he bargained for while waiting for his newborns, a video documenting his journey into fatherhood took the internet by storm.
These days, content can go viral for all kinds of reasons. It may be a hilarious meme, an outraging social media post or a shocking image. However, in 2014 it was an endearing video that captured hearts in Belgium and beyond.
The 45-second clip opens with a man and a dog sitting in a hospital corridor. While the human anxiously taps a newspaper against his hand, his canine friend also appears nervous. And, after a moment, it becomes clear why.
After a short while, a door in front of the waiting pair swings open. From the other side emerges a woman and a man, who are carrying a total of five puppies in their arms. All of a sudden, it dawns on the dog – Kito – that he’s about to enter fatherhood.
Needless to say, the canine has his paws full with his lovable but lively litter. The following scene in the video shows the dog gazing into his microwave as he warms up five bottles for his hungry pups. However, as he does so, his babies wreak havoc across the kitchen worktop.
Kito soon discovers that while feeding his puppies is an endless task, so too is cleaning up after them. As a result, he utilizes his dishwasher, packing it with all the dishes it can possibly hold. But judging by his jam-packed worktop, there’s still a lot of washing up to do.
However, Kito doesn’t spend all his time clearing up after his little ones. He also takes the time to document special moments using a camera. After that, he entertains his pups by letting them ride on an electric train track around their home.
But before long, Kito returns to his chores. He’s forced to pull his vacuum out when one of his babies gets muddy paw prints on the rug. The dad tries to keep one of his brood out of trouble by distracting him with a tablet. However, he later finds his litter raiding the fridge, with the door left wide open.
Following the carnage in the kitchen, it’s bathtime. And Kito kills five birds with one stone by running just one tub for all of his puppies. Once they’re nice and clean, it’s time for sleep. So, their doting dad tucks the babies into bed, before switching on a night light to soothe them.
With his puppies safely delivered to the land of nod, it’s time for Kito himself to get some rest. However, proving that a father’s work is never done, the dad has to hook up his baby monitors before drifting off. And it’s not long before his puppies’ cries fill the airwaves.
With that, the video comes to a close, but not before the intended purpose of the footage is revealed. The clip is, in fact, a commercial for the Belgium-based energy company Electrabel, encouraging consumers to give its service a go.
Kito had been a regular feature in the firm’s adverts since 2012. However, in 2014 marketing masterminds decided to develop the dog’s character by making him a father. And aside from giving viewers five adorable puppies to coo over, the commercial also highlighted how much energy busy families can use.
A description accompanying the commercial on YouTube reads, “Our likeable four-legged Kito has become a dad and that throws his whole life together. He runs from here to there, puts the bottles in the microwave, fills the dishwasher, [and] catches his offspring in the open refrigerator.”
Getting to the crux of the matter, the caption continues, “This, of course, has an influence on the energy consumption of the family. Fortunately, Kito’s owners can count on Electrabel’s advice so that they can better manage their consumption.”
In conclusion, the description ends, “If your life changes, your energy consumption also changes. And to better manage this consumption, you can always count on Electrabel’s advice. Whatever your situation is.”
While it’s not known how successful the advertising campaign was on winning Electrabel new business, the commercial certainly proved a hit. Since going live on YouTube in 2014, the adorable clip of Kito and his babies has been viewed by more than 16 million people.
Given that Kito was undoubtedly the star of the show, Electrabel decided not to retire him after he had his puppies. Instead, the dog went on to star in another commercial in 2015, this time apparently set in the not-so-distant future.
In the ad, the canine arrives at his cutting-edge home on a hoverboard before being greeted by a robot dog. As he runs through his house he passes by a range of technologies, including holograms of his owners and a fridge that requires a paw print to open.
After being denied access to the appliance, Kito is able to 3D print a juicy chicken leg to snack on. But before he can enjoy it, the hologram of his female owner appears to tell him off. So, seemingly without feasting on his specially-made meat, the dog slinks off to his bed, deflated.
Despite the dog’s popularity, Kito was later dropped from Electrabel’s advertising campaigns. As a result, he hasn’t graced television screens since. However, thanks to the internet, his cute antics are still available for all of us to enjoy. And, who knows? Maybe one day Kito will be back with his grown-up pups to entertain us once again.
