Pretty much everyone knows that it’s customary to tip waiters, especially if they’re good hosts. But while the general rule of thumb is to give a total amounting to 15 to 20 percent of the bill as a gratuity, Maurice Green chose to go even further and tip his waiter a cool $100. When Green saw the server’s reaction to the money, though, it made him think again.
On that occasion, Green was enjoying a meal at a Don Pablo’s restaurant in Dallas, Texas. And during that visit, he had noticed how hardworking and kind the waiter who’d served him had been. That employee was a young man called Johnny; unfortunately, though, it turned out that he’d had been in some financial difficulties.
Furthermore, Green engaged with his waiter because he suspected that the guy was feeling down. So, the customer asked how his server’s day was going; after letting out a sigh, however, Johnny admitted that it had been “kind of rough.” And Green was not surprised; “I kind of sensed that,” he said.
But, as it turned out, Green had something in mind that, with any luck, would change Johnny’s terrible day for the better. What’s more, it would help the waiter get back on his feet financially. Yes, Green handed over a highly generous tip: $100 in all.
“I want to sow into your life,” Green is heard saying in a video of the moment as he passes Johnny the $100. Johnny, meanwhile, takes the cash then looks down at the ground, rendered speechless for a moment and seemingly holding back tears.
Then Johnny gathers himself and replies, “You just paid off my car, sir.” He subsequently rubs his eyes and puts the tip into his serving apron. And apparently noting his reaction, a woman dining with Green says “Aww” as the waiter leans over to shake Green’s hand.
And in the video, Green is also heard explaining why he’d decided to give Johnny such a substantial tip. “I wanna sow into your life because I can see you’re working hard, and I think you’ve had a bad day. So, God told me to sow into your life big time.”
Then Green reveals that it was actually the woman sat opposite him who had made the suggestion. “Well, it was actually her,” he says, while pointing at his companion. He adds, “She said, ‘Give him 20 percent, plus add a zero to it.’ So, I said, ‘Babe, I’m going to do better than that.’”
‘“I’m going to give him the 20 percent and then $100!,’” Green continues. “Keep being who you are, keep being nice, don’t let people frustrate you, because people are not nice, and this family – the Green family – wants to bless you. Merry Christmas!”
And as Green speaks, Johnny uses a napkin to wipe his eyes, seemingly overwhelmed by the stranger’s amazing act of kindness. Between Green’s words of encouragement, though, the waiter takes it upon himself to softly say, “Thank you.”
But, apparently, Johnny’s reaction makes Green realize that $100 just isn’t enough, as he then takes out even more money. “You know what? We can do better than that. Here you go, another $100, here you go!” he says as he holds the cash out, waiting for Johnny to take it.
And with that, the waiter covers his eyes with his hands, seemingly unable to comprehend what is happening to him. “Here’s another $100,” Green repeats, as Johnny finally takes the bill. The waiter then backs away, covering his face once more.
But Green, apparently gripped by the Christmas spirit, doesn’t want to stop there. “You know what?” he says once more. “We can do better than that, here’s another $100!” Amazingly, he takes out yet another note and hands it over to the incredulous waiter.
Meanwhile, Johnny stands rooted to the spot, continuing to shield his face. “Here you go. There you go, sir. Come on!” Green exclaims in response. Eventually, though, Johnny moves in and gratefully palms the final bill. “That’s $300,” Green then says. “You just got blessed.”
“Merry Christmas!” Green adds, cheerfully. Johnny then breaks down in tears; and after that he goes on to approach the generous diner and shows his appreciation with an embrace.
The recording of the touching encounter, meanwhile, was later uploaded to the internet. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, the footage eventually went viral, with the uplifting scenes of Christmas generosity being viewed millions of times around the world.
And many viewers felt compelled to comment on what they’d seen; some were even reduced to happy tears. Of course, as with any viral video that’s shared around, some individuals questioned the motives behind the recording. The majority of commenters recognized it for what it was, however.
Indeed, a lot of people have subsequently chosen to praise Green for the kindness he showed towards Johnny. And on a retelling of the story on website SoShareThis, La’shay Manning from Atlanta, Georgia, also decided to explain how seeing the footage had made her feel.
Manning wrote, “I was very touched by what Maurice did. What makes the video so beautiful is knowing that there are still some good people in the world, knowing the fact that people can touch other’s hearts in unexpected ways. This was the most beautiful video ever.”
And Green and his family certainly deserve a round of applause for brightening up one waiter’s dreary day. Let’s hope, then, that others go on to take a note out of their book, especially during the holidays.
