Life had not been kind to Smack the pit bull. After winding up in a rescue center for abused and abandoned dogs, her dreams were shattered after her adoption fell through. However, Smack was given a second chance. And from the moment she crossed the threshold of her new life, she knew that she was home.
For more than 20 years, the Animal Planet channel has delighted viewers with tales from our wild world. One of the network’s most popular shows is Pit Bulls & Parolees, a reality series that follows the daily goings-on at the Villalobos Rescue Center.
Tia Torres founded the center during the 1990s, choosing Agua Dulce in California as its base. Since then, Torres and her family have helped to find countless pit bulls forever homes, saving them from lives of neglect, abuse and abandonment.
However, what sets Villalobos Rescue Center apart from other animal organizations is its employment of parolees. Since 2006 the outfit has helped rehabilitate former convicts, who in turn assist dogs in their journey to adoption.
With that in mind, Pit Bulls & Parolees has helped to shine a more positive light on the maligned dog breed and people trying to put their lives together after prison. The show has also raised the profile of the Villalobos Rescue Center, meaning that the number of animals directed to the organization has quadrupled since Pit Bulls & Parolees first aired in 2009.
The Villalobos Rescue Center moved its operations to Louisiana in 2011. And according to the organization’s website, it now takes in 60 dogs each month. One of the many pit bulls to find themselves at the center was Smack – a lovable pup, who just hadn’t found her way in life yet.
After her arrival at the Villalobos Rescue Center, it didn’t appear that her luck would change any time soon. Smack’s first adoption opportunity, unfortunately, fell through. As a result, she was left on the shelf, patiently waiting for someone to sweep her off her paws.
Luckily though, Smack got a second shot at happiness when she caught the attention of a woman named Doris. Their story was featured on an episode of Pit Bulls & Parolees, and their blossoming friendship was beautiful to witness.
After her adoption was agreed, Smack was taken to Doris’ home to see how she would like it there. In the heartwarming clip, the hopeful adoptive mom reveals she feels “like a kid waiting in the candy store” as she awaits the pit bull’s arrival in her yard.
Soon after, Smack comes bounding down a wooden ramp and onto Doris’ lawn. Clearly eager to investigate, the dog practically ignores her new owner and instead sniffs her way around the yard to see if it meets up with her expectations.
It appears that it does because after a little while she finally comes to greet Doris. After dutifully following her new human’s command to “sit,” she earns herself a tasty treat. “You like those?” Doris asks, before adding, “Hopefully so, because I’ve bought a bunch of them.”
With a treat in her tummy and plenty more in Doris’ pantry, Smack looked happier than ever. She expressed her joy by rolling onto her back and rubbing herself all over her new yard. “I think she loves the grass,” her handler comments as she looks on in joy.
After becoming acquainted with the yard, Smack turns her attention to Doris’ house. And from the moment she steps inside, it’s clear to see that the pit bull is home. She sniffs around various rooms intently before arriving in a bedroom, in which Doris is already proudly displaying a photo of the dog.
Commenting on the pit bull’s clear enthusiasm for her new home, her handler later says, “When I first brought Smack inside, she was comfortable right away. At one point, I wasn’t even sure where she went, and she was already exploring all of the rooms of the house.”
The happy handler continues, “It was adorable to see her so comfortable. It was almost like she’d been there before.” She later adds, “It was obvious that Smack loved it there, just [by] the way that she was prancing around the house.”
After Smack has got her bearings, Doris indulges her new dog with one of the many brand new toys she has bought. And as she watches the pit bull chew on one of them happily, she later gushes, “Oh, she’s mine! The more I see her and be around her, the more I love her.”
Elaborating on her feelings for Smack, Doris says, “I don’t think I realized how much I missed a dog until Smack came. Then it kind of hit me that there was a void there, and now it’s filled. I think that any time you get a new pet, it’s a new chapter.”
With Smack in her life, Doris was excited to get to know her new four-legged friend properly. And she was hopeful that their bond would continue to grow. “I’m looking forward to learning her little tricks and traits. I think we’re going to get along really good,” she reveals.
Smack’s handler meanwhile was convinced that Smack would soon settle into her new life with Doris. “I think that she’s going to be very happy here,” she predicts. Recalling the way the dog acted upon arriving at Doris’ place, the woman adds, “I think that she was letting us know that she was home.”
After Smack’s story aired on Pit Bulls & Parolees many people were happy to have witnessed the dog get her happy ending. “Loved to see Smack get a wonderful forever home,” one person wrote on Facebook in 2016. “Her new mommy loves her very much and will give Smack all the love she can… [A] great ending to Smack’s past.”
