A Mom Was Filming As Her Baby Fell Asleep – And Caught The Moment Their Puppy Approached

Callie, a three-month-old pit bull and Catahoula cross, was rescued by a couple in 2012 when they found her fastened to a fence next to their house. It was clear that the dog had been abandoned, and so the pair took Callie in and made her part of their family.

Then, following a heart-warming incident, the dog’s owner uploaded a video to her YouTube channel featuring her baby son, Ian, and Callie together. The channel in question, Cute Animals, has thousands of subscribers, and the video has so far been viewed more than 54 million times.

And after being asked a lot of questions about the footage, Callie’s owner responded on YouTube. “Our son is about three months old in the video (the same age as Callie),” she wrote. “And he would roll over to his tummy when he slept.”

However, pit bulls have a reputation for aggression, as they were originally bred to be fighting dogs. You see, the animals are descended from Old English Bulldogs, which were involved in so-called blood sports in the 1800s. And although such “sports” were made illegal in the U.K. in 1835, they still continued to take place.

Subsequently, smaller-scale “rat-baiting” and dog fighting, which involved pooches fighting one another or chasing rats in pits, became more prevalent. And dogs were specifically bred for such events, in fact – hence the name “pit bulls.” This also explains why pit bulls are often associated with aggression.

Despite this reputation, though, Callie’s family apparently felt comfortable with a pit bull in the house alongside their three-month-old baby. Indeed, on YouTube, Callie’s owner even referred to the animal as the “sweetest dog” they ever had. And in the video, the canine can be seen approaching the sleeping baby.

In the clip, the infant can be seen lying down asleep on his belly atop a blue blanket, with Callie sitting next to him. The dog is on her hind legs and has a purple collar around her neck which is attached to a bright yellow lead.

However, the dog is clearly sleepy, as she’s swaying backwards and forwards. Callie subsequently shifts position to try and stay awake, but her eyes are drooping as she struggles to keep them open. The pup then looks at the camera for a few seconds before swaying again and nearly falling over.

Then, people can be heard speaking in the background. And this wakes the puppy briefly – her ears prick up, in fact, and she looks around. But the noise doesn’t seem to be able to keep the little dog awake for too long, as she begins to sway again.

The pup then moves toward the head of the baby and keeps shifting position, seemingly trying to get comfortable – although without success. As the dog continues to struggle and moves behind the infant, someone in the background of the video asks, “You don’t know how to lay down, honey?”

Callie then finds the perfect position, however. She lays down behind the baby and uses him as a pillow. The dog places her little head on the back of the infant’s neck and finally seems comfy enough to shut her eyes.

And while Callie’s owners appear to find her actions amusing and adorable, their laughter unfortunately wakes the puppy up again. The dog appears startled, then moves to the back of the baby’s head and continues to look around.

The fun didn’t stop there, though, as the dog and child have apparently continued to play together as they’ve grown older. And in another video that was uploaded in 2015, the pair can be seen three years after the original footage. In this particular clip, however, the pooch and her human friend are both much bigger, and Callie appears to have had some training.

You see, Callie is called over by Ian’s mom, and the young boy is instructed to give the pooch a cookie. The dog is subsequently told to sit by Ian’s mother, who is behind the camera, but Callie doesn’t obey. Then it’s Ian’s turn to try to convince his furry friend to sit.

So, holding a dog treat in the air, Ian tells Callie to sit and points at the floor with his free hand. It takes two attempts, but the dog does eventually sit down. And as she does so, Ian gives her the cookie and tells her that she’s a good animal.

Callie then takes the cookie and goes off to lie down while being rewarded by both Ian and his mom repeatedly saying, “Good girl, good girl.” As the video ends, Ian is seen patting the dog on the head. It would therefore seem that the two have remained close.

What’s more, the family appear to be animal lovers in general, as their YouTube channel also includes some cat videos. And in one clip, a cardboard box with a kitty inside is shown. The person in the footage is then seen being swatted by a paw as they playfully tease the cat.

Moreover, the videos seem to have inspired a lot of interest on YouTube, with viewers leaving plenty of comments. For instance, Lorie Leef described the clips as “probably the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. I bet they have quite the emotional bond.”

And other viewers left similar comments, too. “I’m not a dog person, but this video is pulling at my heart strings,” wrote Rubaida Allen. “An adorable sleeping baby and a cute puppy who’s protecting a baby and sleepy at the same time? Awwwwwwww, indeed.”
